re: Shams: Pels Don't Think Zion Even Close to Coming Back

He's afraid of not looking like Duke Zion Williamson. He comes back out of shape and fat and people make fun of him, and he and the idiots around him are very cautious about his brand
Griff is on record saying the organization failed last season by not letting Zion talk to the media. But the media has requested Zion interviews this week/last week, and he's refused so the rumors will persist.

quote:Yep, if that were to be true, Zion should be dying to get in front of a microphone and say he is ready and wants to play and the org is not letting him. What would he have to lose?
Yea if it’s true you need to fire griffin asap. There’s not really a realistic way this gets any better if that’s the case.
Griff should also be fired yesterday if that is true.
I can understand a more cautious approach year 1 and year 2, slowly letting Zion/his body calibrate to the longer, more grinding NBA seasons and more importantly, while we weren't playing for anything with shite rosters.
But it's year 4 and we have a little something to play for, now is no longer the time to be super cautious.

I can't see the team being the one thats refusing Zion talk. If that's the case, then that's a big problem as well. He's a grown arse man and can say whatever the frick he wants. B/c of that, we assume his silence is his own doing, which is remarkably stupid, yet again.
The assumption everyone is making is that Zion is the reason Zion isn't playing. And that's a safe assumption since he refuses to tell us otherwise.
If Griff is the reason he's not playing, and he can be, then Zion needs to stand up and say that. He's the #1 employee of Gayle Benson, not Griff. Griff isn't this untouchable GM that you give the benefit of the doubt to. He's failed everywhere's he's been. If the organization has to chose between Zion and Griff, then it's a very easy choice. As an owner in this situation, you would be close to both people and know which one is the one to keep. Sometimes a player is immature and a bad seed and it's better to let them go. and maybe that's the case here, but i have a hard time believing Griff over anyone. I've never liked him as our GM.

Now Zion has been asked to talk, and he won't. And as a result, all his teammates have to deal with the bullshite lingering because he won't talk.
To your 2nd point, everything is done in back channels, which I hate but that's just the game. Griff comes out and gives the mostly PC answer, then immediately gives more precise answers to Shams to run with.
Zion can and should do the same thing. I'd prefer he get right in front of a pic and say he's ready to go and the team won't allow him to, but I get that this may be a bit too direct. But if Zion thinks he's ready to play, why in the world would he NOT be leaking to Shams/Woj and anyone else that the team is holding him back and he wants to go? I can't really think of any reason why you wouldn't put max pressure to come back if you truly thought you could play.

Damn... Just when you think we finally got past all the rampant off season speculations with the contract extension, It's going to be one shitty arse offseason full of rumors and speculations all over again. frick this shite.

i agree. the only reason why he wouldn't come out and say this is b/c he's not ready to play, either physically not ready and can't, or isn't 100% and doesn't want to play unless he's 100% (which goes back to what i said about him not wanting to embarress himself if he's not 100%).
Zion refusing to talk is what pisses me off more than anything, and that's on him. If there's a riff between him and Griff, everyone would be on Zion's side, so why sit back and be silent and look like the arse. Staying quiet isn't helping him, at all, and they should have learned that lesson already.

You can be fat and have your hamstring heal. This is way too long

Talked to my buddy who is close to some of the senior guys in the organization (not Griff). He basically said this has become a power play about getting Z to buy in to the program and grow up before his extension kicks in. Z flat out dislikes all the rules and metrics the training staff uses to determine if he can play, thinks they’re “stupid” and wants to play his way back, have fun, and help the team. Griff’s approach is very paternalistic to some even in the building who think he just doesn’t get or accept that it’s a players league and you risk alienating your franchise star by keeping him out until he hits the benchmarks you set. Said this dynamic between Z and Griff has been there from the start and almost caused a full rupture last year…second hand stuff but I trust the guy
So basically, Griff and Aaron Nelson like losing

Lol, I mean, it sounds ridiculous but it’s really what we are talking about here. His weight is complete immaterial to me. Hammy has had months now, he’s literally practicing on it (to some degree at least). Can he or can he not suit up?

Then he'd play.

Or the team doctors, not Nelson, aren’t very good. Didn’t the saints fire a doctor for misdiagnosis that the Pels kept a few years back?
The Lakers got the “LeBron James of foot doctors” to take a look at James’ foot and reevaluate him.
Can the Pels get the “Michael Jordan of hamstring doctors” to reevaluate Zion?

That’s the wave they should have been on from the second Memphis came out the 2nd envelope. Help him in every possible way with the best of the best. Can’t complain or disagree with the best opinions possible

Is that before or after going to Harrah’s buffet?!?

Give me a few examples of a star coming back from an injury and not playing due to conditioning
Posted on 4/11/23 at 8:39 pm to The_Duke
Maybe Shaq but they let him play even if he wasn’t conditioned lol
Posted on 4/11/23 at 11:16 pm to The_Duke
You still going with the “cautious staff” idea? Lol

See you next season. After another yearly payment has been made on his max contract.
