It may not happen, ultimately. But I wouldn't bet serious money on Dell holding the GM title two or three years from now.

Im just saying, guys dont get demoted and stay with that same team. At least I've never heard of that happening.

Fwiw, JVG was grilled pretty hard by Dan Patrick this morning about returning to coaching and the chance to coach AD. JVG danced around the questions but never denied that there have been discussions. He also said that any coach would love to coach a talent (and a good guy) like AD.

Here's the Van Gundy interview with Dan Patrick.

Yeah, he's DEFINITELY talked to the Pelicans.

Yeah, he really had to pause and think of an evasive answer when DP started pushing him.

I would say cautiously optimistic depending on the staff he puts together.

He's been a very good coach in the past, and a great defensive one. He hasn't coached in awhile, but has been extremely close to the game and has embraced analytics a good bit.

Its an interesting hire and one that could be great, if he has successfully evolved his philosophies with the modern game.

Is the only reason he hasnt coached in a while because of health issues? How was he in Houston?

After speaking to multiple sources, it’s clear there’s growing a sentiment that the Bulls/Thibs situation will reach a conclusion this week.

Also Woj is saying people around Hoiberg think he's going to Chicago. And now Marc Stein is saying Chicago is getting closer to just firing Thibs

He doesn't have any health issues. He turns down jobs every offseason. He's considering it now because of AD

And the plot thickens.

I can link you to some articles if you want, but the TL;DR version is that although he's known as a defense 1st coach (original Thibs), he's down with analytics and his last few years in Houston showed him increasing pace and 3 point rate while reducing the number of long 2s and forcing opponents to take long 2s. He was already moving in the direction the league has now arrived at when he was still in Houston. So while you may not get a Phoenix Suns style offense, you should get better offense than Thibs would bring while hopefully bringing just as much defense.
