I don't doubt that AD will re-sign with the Pelicans and be with the team for at least another 4 seasons, but would he make more money by signing the QO and then re-signing with us? I know this was being talked about on the twitters, but I was under the impression that max contracts were based on percentage of the cap and not a specific dollar amount. So I don't see why it would make a difference.

If I'm wrong, then it brings up another question: if AD WOULD make more money with the QO + Pels extension in 2016's offseason, wouldn't it be the best thing for both sides? Would it not free up like $10m this season, giving us some serious options in free agency is we do some combination of either dealing Gordon/Ryno and not re-signing Asik?

It certainly wouldn't be best for us. The amount of coverage it would get would be deafening. It would be an awful situation.

You don't take on the injury risk of the QO period.

I think he takes max dollar while it's there.

Max contracts are based upon a percentage, so it wouldn't make a difference.

First, his contract next season is a rookie scale contract. He can sign the extension this offseason and it will kick in following that rookie contract year. If he is the designated player, it will be for 5 seasons, so Davis will actually be on the books for 6 total seasons at that point... 1+5.

Second, he would have to endure 2 seasons and a lockout where max contract rules and values could change for the QO route to matter. Depending on how long you think he plays and how long his contracts are for, the upside is not too great in waiting compared to the downside. I have not put pen to paper, but it seems so not worth it, even if it is profitable in the best case.

Third, max contracts starting salaries are based on a percentage, but from there they are based on that value, not the current cap.

Fourth, the cap will rise the season Davis' deal kicks in. Language can be written in so that he gets the max salary for that season's cap, not the one when he signed. He can also have language in that allows his 30% stuff to kick in, should he meet the critera (he will).

I see no reason for him not to sign.

Signing the QO would be awful for the Pelicans and that wouldn't be until next summer, IIRC. Theoretically, he could make more $, but that's assuming the cap goes from $88 to $100+. That's entirely possible, but no one really knows what will happen.

There has been some talk of AD not signing this summer and then using his smaller cap hit to load up in FA before signing next summer. Unlike the QO route, they still retain his restricted rights. But they can hold off signing him to maximize their cap flexibility. Connjecture is that is what the Spurs are doing with Kawhi.

To me, it seems sort of silly. Davis is the franchise. Don't mess around with him. Lock him up for as much as he wants as soon as possible. He'll get ~30% of the $88M cap for 5 years and be set for life.

Signing the QO would also suck because there is still a real chance we don't make the playoffs next season, which would be seen as moving backwards. The Western Conference is that good. Basically have to hope Marc leaves, Dallas rebuilds, and Spurs all retire. If OKC comes back to full strength and nothing really changes we will be back to battling for our playoff lives.

I'm tired of Laker fans thinking that all the top players want to go and play for the sorry arse Lakers. AD isn't going there. Sorry.

The Pels even with all the injuries are not battling for their playoff lives if they just win some of the easy games.
