Shamit Dua, aka Kumar drops a bomb in today's In The NO podcast:

quote:

The Pelicans, as much as the statement said it was their decision, it was not their decision, ok. They had their hand forced by the NBA...[then explains how the NBA doesn't put things in writing they just "strongly recommend" things]...What they strongly recommended the Pelicans do is they play Davis every possible game you can play him, but not only that, he isn't allowed to deviate from his average minutes by a significant amount. So it's not like you can just check him in and sub him out 3 minutes into the 1st quarter and call it a night. No, you're looking to play him 27, 30, 33 minutes a night...

...What if the Pelicans go "screw you guys, I'm gonna just eat whatever fines you throw at us" because it's just simply not worth us risking our asset. Well, they can't, because the fines are daily fines and they grow and then you get into the loss of draft picks. And this is not me speculating, this is, I'm going to say this very clearly, I got told by 2 different sources today that that would be the outcome if the Pelicans chose to sit Anthony Davis or go against anything that the NBA suggested.

LINK It starts about the 4 minute mark

I understand that it isn't a good look for the league to have one of it's best players getting healthy DNPs, but this is just absurd. The dude came out and said he doesn't want to be here. Send him to his summer house in LA until we work out a trade for him. Why are you forcing us to risk devaluing our return, and in the process meaninglessly risking the health of one of the faces of your league.

He doesn't want to play here. The league fined him for saying that. Now the league is threatening to take draft picks away from us for granting his wish.

Probably bc the NBA is mad we didn't give him to the Lakers.

It’s almost like I started a thread showing the true consequences the league is threatening long term if they didn’t play him

If that was the target you were aiming for you worded it terribly. That's not what I or I think most got out of your thread at all.

In the N.O. is a great name for a podcast about New Orleans sports.

Your thread is nothing like the content of the OP.

When you come in to pat yourself on the back, at least make sure it fits what's going on with the thread.

Cannot imagine that Silver could arbitrarily take draft picks if this is not clearly spelled out in the rules. If it is spelled out, the media certainly missed this when the anti-tanking discussions were taking place last year.

I just don't understand how this is possible, based on what rule?

Is there a rule that says the NBA has the right to tell teams how many minutes a player should play?

I’m sorry if I’m better at reading between the lines and prognosticating future patterns than most.

Right. Long term. But he also said he wants to play games now. It makes little sense, but here we are.

If he doesn't say that, I don't think it matters. He could easily just move to LA and collect checks until he is traded this summer. But he has made it known he wants to play basketball

You should be sorry that your thread had nothing to do with this one.

One of the many reasons Bounty Gate was unfair is because practically every team in the NFL did the same thing. I'm sure there is some rule nearly every team breaks that the league could choose to selectively enforce on the Pels. You know teams and players/agents regularly have conversations they shouldn't have for example.

It's not the league office. It's Davis saying he wants to play that is the problem.

Not suprised. He’s healthy and isn’t cancerous. He says all the right things and is a top 5 player. It would have been a bad look for the franchise if they sat him the rest of the way. It’s kind of funny when the players refuses to play, because the league does absolutely nothing about it. But when the roles are reversed, its foul play.

I get that.

But there are 12th guys on the bench who play in 10 games in a season and 2 minutes per game. They can say they want to play too, doesn't mean we have to guarantee them 35 minutes per game.

My point is, what rule can the NBA incorporate that essentially says the NBA has the right to tell a team not just that a guy has to play but all the way down to how many minutes per game a guy should play?

Guys lose minutes for various reasons all the time. If we greatly reduced AD's minutes to 20-25mpg under the guise of the season is essentially over, and we want to see what we have with our younger, developing guys, what specific rule does the NBA have to tell us, nah can't do that?

I mean where the hell do you draw the line here? We have to start him and play him 36 mins per game? Do we get fined if we only play him 25? Lose a second rounder if he's held out of a SEGABABA? This all seems super arbitrary.

This likely gets super awkward for AD at home games too. I can see him getting booed mercilessly on a nightly basis. Rich Paul doing solid work.
