Pistons fire Gentry in March of 2000

Gentry fired by Clippers in March 2003

Suns fire Gentry in January of 2013

WHy would you trust a man that has failed three times previous to continue to blow games with his inability to coach in the clutch? He is a nice guy and the players love him but he seems a bit slow to be coaching at the caliber needed to bring some pretty decent talent to the next level.

Why do these threads keep popping up after close losses to top teams in the league? Because that's the only time the team loses and people think they have free reign to complain. The last time they lost to a team not in the playoff picture was December 20th against the Warriors.

Losses since then
Lakers
Jazz
Celtics
Clippers
Spurs
Nuggets
Rockets
Bucks
Thunder
Lakers
Lakers

When was the last time a Hornican team had that kind of loss profile? They're not a top team yet but they're taking care of business against the middling and worse teams.

I hope Gentry gets promoted off the bench this summer, but you guys are reaching. Why don't you guys start these threads after a win with some actual basketball analysis?

That nuggets game shouldn't be on there. Were missing Murray and Milsap if I'm not mistaken. It was a pretty bad loss

I just hope whatever successor can keep this style of offense while also just being better in other aspects than Uncle Al. This offense is fun as hell and pretty efficient, too, dont want to mess it up

This.

The language about how the Pels "blew" this game or it was an "inexcusable" loss is over the top and betrays the lack of any real insight other than "loss = mad."

And there are always several threads after any loss like that. The expectation for some is the Pels should never lose.

Did the Pels play their absolute best game? No. The 3pt shooting just wasn't there tonight and the defense was too leaky. Did they play poorly? No. They played hard and pretty well, just not well enough. It's a young team and it shows in key moments vs the best teams.

Always going to be emotional v Lakers, but they are very good.

this board benefits from sharing a room with LSU and the saints and also suffers from sharing a room with LSU and the saints

not much can be done about it

The Lakers are a great team but in the NBA over an 82 game season a coach who only wins the "expected" wins is worth a warm bucket of spit. Why bother paying $4 million if you are not going to ever to get your team to reach and stay in a game you are not expected to win? Just find some high school coach and pay him minimum wage. Gentry has evidently been a good guy to have on the bench as an assistant and that does not automatically mean he has what it takes to be a head coach as shown by being fired at that job 3 times. Other coaches leave him in the dust when they make late game adjustments he seems unable to counter. He also fails to adjust strategy in any given night when part of his team's game is not clicking. And I still cannot fathom why he is leaving Jaxson Hayes on the bench as often as he is. A good coach would at least be in the top 8 with the talent we have. Pops would have this team at 5 or maybe 4.

Of course the immediate whining after losses is silly. That said, do you think Al is the right choice for next season? Do you really think our roster was not superior to their roster last night? This was a game we should have won. You dont hire or fire a guy for one game but dont couch this loss as expected because they are the 1 seed...they were missing AD and LBJ's balding white twin.

I love our trio from the Lakers. For whatever reason, BI sucks vs them. Maybe it is the pressure, maybe a desire to prove LBJ wrong. Whatever it is, he plays down vs this particular team right now.

Good coaches react when a top player is off and make adjustments around the deficiency. Gentry seems unable to stray from his gameplan, which in this game left Jaxson Hayes on the bench.

If you wanted Jaxson in this game we can go ahead and disregard whatever you have to say.

Not this game so much as every game. Last ten games he has averaged 8 minutes while shooting over 66%. He has played well enough to deserve more time on the floor and Gentry should figure out more ways to get him out there to further develop his still raw talent.

I’m not a Gentry fan but he isn’t the reason why we lost. His system is actually one that really fits the type of players we currently have. Gentry has nothing to do with shooting 20% from 3.

$4 Million/year for below average, at best, to incompetent is what you get in today's world of sports. Shows how messed up sports have gotten in today's world.

His system. His system seems to me a morph of whatever head coach for who he was last an assistant. I do not think he has a system of his own.

The takes here on Gentry are so fricking shitty and dumb that I have to defend a mediocre coach.

There is a fundamental lack of understanding what the rest of the league looks like. There is also an overwhelming blind faith in a genius, savior coach.

Pop and the Spurs have a worse defense than the Pels and offense only Alvin Gentry.

Spoelstra's Heat just lost two games this past week when they were up by 19 in the 4th (to the Wolves) and 12 with 4 minutes left (to the Cavs). They have lost 7 of their last 9.

Rick Carlisle's team blew a 30 point lead with 2:55 left in the 3rd this year.

Pels fans are bitching about Gentry because the Pels, whose 2 best players are 19 and 22, lost to the veteran, title contending Lakers in a close, hard fought game. In other news, dog bites man.

Gentry's not the answer. He's not the reason they lost last night. And there is no guarantee they find anyone better

He hasn't earned minutes to take away from zion, favors and melli.
