The Jazz have not been trying to win. They literally have been fined for this. That's changing this year as they have made moves that indicate they are ready to start tryign to win every night.

????? Your reason is that they "made moves that indicate they are ready to start tryign to win every night". That's not blind optimism for real?
quote:

Markannen and JJJ are a formidable duo down low now, throw in Nurkic and Bamba to help and it's going to be really difficult for anyone to rebound against them.
Keyonte George had a breakout year and looks like a future all-star.
Bailey had a decent year last year and they have the #2 pick in the draft ready to go.
There's a ton of excitement for the Jazz this season.

So your opinion for the Jazz is based off a bunch of shite that has NOT happened and the only data is that we have finished above them every year for 5+ years?
quote:

Don't sit here and try to tell me i'm fricking ridiculous for thinking the Jazz are likely going to be better than us this year and i'm just being negative.

You aren't negative for the Pels just super positive about a bunch of shite that hasn't happened based on a negative view of the Pels...
quote:

I've been optimistic and excited every offseason for the last 23 fricking years. This is the first year i'm not.

Yeah this is called being negative.

Its not even unbiased or neutral... You never once even said it could be close or that the Pels can. Just straight up the Jazz are better, end of discussion. Alright.

Man we mentioning Mo Bamba and Jusuf Nurkic to prop up the Jazz. Everything else valid tho

I'm not even arguing that the Jazz didn't get better. I actually even specifically mentioned them as the wild card in my original post.

But apparently the Pels have absolutely nothing going for them and Jazz have Nurkic/ Bo Bamba so wtf do I know. Hahahaha

Not being negative about the Pels and not being blindly optimistic about the Jazz. But frick Fears/ Queen/ Missi/ Murray and praise Nurkic/ Bamba.

Yeah this shite is ridiculous.

Not negative towards the Pels but has said more good things about the Utah fricking Jazz in a single post than he has about the Pels in several threads. Yuuup.

A team who has still been worse than us through the entire period that the negativity derives from.

Can't make this shite up.

yeah no shite. I literally said i'm not optimistic about this season, for the first fricking time in 24 years of my fandom.

I don't want to argue with your optimism. I'm glad you can find some joy in being a pelican fan at this time. I cannot, and that's not something that has been the norm for me since they came here 24 years ago. I am not one who has brought negativity to this team over the many years i've been a fan and on this site.I typically can get excited about the start of the season no matter what, but i just don't have that this year. I have made bets on the over for season wins and zion mvp the last few years. I even said last offseason i wasn't going to bet on them b/c i didn't believe in them, then we got closer to the season and i got excited, like i always do. hell just last year i bet the over on wins, bet on Zion MVP, bet on Herb DPOY, bet on Fears ROTY, and then after seeing Queen for a few games went bet him for ROTY. Made bets on Zion to average over 25ppg and Trey to hit 4 3's per game.
That ain't happening this year.

That's pretty much the whole problem on here. I'm being a normal person, you claim I'm being optimistic, and the admit that you are blatantly negative.

But will still argue with me like I'm being unreasonable?

And that's fair. But tghat doesn't mean that without a doubt the Pels will absolutely suck and a team like the Jazz will get 20 extra wins.

I too am sick of the Zion era but its not anymore so that's where the excitement comes form. He is on the team, he is not "the team" like we have planned for the previous 5 years.

If you look at it the other way, this is the most success I can see a team having without Zion in the last 5+ years even if he does miss. Mainly because we are not building around him or even relying on him.

So all the betting sites think the Jazz will have over 30 wins and the Pels will have under 30, but you're the normal one for thinking we'll probably be better than the Jazz.
Looking at the situation without, i'd normally say purple and gold glasses, but in this case i don't even know what color the Pelicans are to say whatever color Pels glasses, but if you took your Pels glasses off you'd come to a logical reason as to why the Jazz are projected to win several more games than we are this year, but you don't seem to be able to do that. That's fine. I appreciate your optimism. But don't act like I'm beign negative for having that logical opinion. As i said, i am not optimistic about this season and this team right now, but don't confuse that with logically thinking another team is better than us. Is it negative of me to think the Thunder will be better than us?
There's a difference between logical opinions that don't favor the Pels, and being pessimistic. I'm not saying i'm not pessimistic about the Pels, but thinking the Jazz will be better isn't that.

So, whatever prediction you have for Pelicans over/under next season...if you haven't considered that variable...I probably would...if I were you

So whatever prediction you have for every single team in the NBA needs to be adjusted and seeding doesn't change at all.

Apparently, I did a poor job of explaining my "point". I'll try this way...last season, the Pels went 11-7 vs the 5 worst teams in the NBA who were basically trying to lose as often as they could. Their combined W/L record was 100-310. As noted, the Pels were 11-7 vs these teams...and 15-49 vs all the other teams in the NBA...who were NOT trying to lose like the bottom 5 teams were.

I thought the subject of this thread was to discuss the over/under on the amount of "wins" the Pelicans would have this year...NOT "seeding". With basically no teams wanting to end up in the bottom 3...that 11-7 record vs the "total tankers" will vanish. So, getting 26 wins next season will be harder to get...than they were this past season...given the disappearance of the "total tankers"...and when analyzed with the 3-2-1 "variable" included.

I can 100% see why the Jazz would be expected to be better than the Pelicans. Anyone who doesn't is either overly optimistic or does not follow what the Jazz have built. Markkanen, JJJ, Peterson, Bailey, George, Filipkowski, Sensabaugh, Okogie, Nurkic. While maybe not a top team, they are likely to be a play-in or playoff team.

JJJ headlined a 25-57 team and missed the end of the season due to his 3rd knee injury.

Markkanen headlined a 22-60 team.

Peterson has not played a real NBA minute.

The reality is that neither of you have a fricking clue what they "built" and we have absolutely no clue if they end up better than the Pels or behind them like the previous 5 seasons.

Blatantly assuming every player they added will do amazing and every Pelicans player will suck is not being overly optimistic towards the Pels.

Its by definition the exact opposite and being blatantly optimistic for the Jazz.

The Jazz got better but we don't have a clue how much better. The Pels got better (marginally) and were already better.

I'm not buying the Jazz either. The pieces just don't fit, and they don't know how to win. Plus all their guys are super frail, and injury prone. Do any of those guys play 65+ games? I doubt it.

All that said, this is supposed to be the year they turn it on. But who is the 1 and who is the 2? Tons of talent, but no star or leader, unless Peterson is just the guy out of the gate. That just doesn't seem likely..

You can only argue season stats with best case scenario for other teams and worse case scenario for Pels. Its a rule on here.

The jazz literally would take Markkanen out of games to ensure they would lose. They were sitting Markkanen and George to ensure they would lose. Then Sensabaugh started going off and they had to start sitting him as well to make sure they would lose. I point you towards a game late in the season against the Kings where Sensabaugh was the only guy playing for the Jazz worth a shite. Jazz are down by 1 going into the 4th and Sensabaugh has 18 points through 3 quarters and plays 3 minutes of the 4th, while Bez Mbeng plays the whole quarter, and of course the Jazz lose.
Again, they were fined for blatantly trying to tank.

but sure, adding a 26 year old DPOY who averages 20ppg and shoots 35% from 3 as a big probably won't improve their team.

and yeah, when you try to project teams for the season you try to assume relative good health for every team even though you know injuries are going to happen. that's logical to do.
A healthy Jazz team is going to project to be better than a healthy Pelicans team.
And to be honest i think there's an unfair bias that most people assume we'll have injury issues when you talk about our win total, b/c i do think we are much better than 28 wins this season if we are healthy.

But i think this wins projection comes from two assumptions:
1. we'll have injury issues
2. we're going to trade key pieces away and start a rebuild.

On paper, if this team stays healthy, there's no reason they can't be a .500 team. But that's why they play the game on the hardwood and not on paper.

How in the hell did do you assume the Pels get better by doing nothing? Do you even know what the Jazz did? Did you watch George at all? Markannen missed half the season and they intentionally benched him to lose games. JJJ is a great defender but I think he was better at the 5. Peterson was the 2nd pick of the draft, but you give no credence to his potential? They are probably as hyped about Bailey as we are about Fears. They certainly are no shoe-in, but I can certainly see why they are projected to be better than the Pels. It is a projection. Injuries can change everything,

No one has disagreed with this. And no one has even disagreed that they won't be much improved. It is still quite wild to be confident the Jazz are a playoff team. Wild card for 8 seed/ play in sure. Guaranteed playoffs/ play in still a stretch.

Kings/ Clipps/ Grizz should easily end up bottom 3.

quote:

No one said this. Improve a 22-60 team enough to be a guaranteed playoff team? After coming off a season ending injury? Possibly but not nearly as gauranteed or set in stone as y'all are presuming.

Our 29 over/ under wins is heavily weighted on injury expectations. And because we have been the most injured team the last 5+ years we probably have a lot more L's acocunted for in those projections than other teams. Jazz projection probably assumes a healthy JJJ when in reality Zion played 14 more games than him last year.

But I don't really care about Z/ Trey. People are really underestimating Murray/ Fears/ Queen/ Missi.

We are sitting here talking about the negative impact of injuries but Z played the 2nd most games of his career last year along with Queen- 81, Fears-82.

Great things that won't be acknowledged or bring any postive outlook to the team.

How the hell do you assume we get worse or even stay the exact same with a full season of Murray, along with more experience from Queen/ Fears/ Missi, and the healthiest Z we've seen? I specifically used the word marginally, I didn't say we are championship bound. I'm saying that both the Pels and Jazz should be better.

Projected Wins- Actual Wins
24-22
28- 17
35-31

Jazz have also been under their win projections the last 3 years with very low projections and Markannen has averaged 48 games per season in that span. JJJ also played 48 games last year and is coming off injury.

The Pels should be marginally better and the Jazz will also get better but we have absolutely no clue how much better.

If Fears continues dropping 30-40pt games and Queen somehow improves from what he's already done then yes I find it hard to believe Peterson makes up for that gap on his own. That's not unreasonable considering we haven't seen him or their 2 stars together who both played less than 50 games last year.

I'll believe the Jazz are good when I see it just as much as y'all will believe the Pels are good when y'all see it.

There have been more positive comments/ excitement about Nurkic/ Sensabaugh/ Mo Bamba/ Jazz in this thread than possibly 10 combined threads of any Fears/ Queen/ Missi/ Pels related comments. This board is weird as frick.

You mention Fears/ Queen/ Missi and can barely get any positive responses regarding our most exciting prospects and yet here we are choosing to spend more words talking up Nurkic off the bench and Brice Sensabaugh.

I haven't seen it mentioned yet (though I scrolled fairly quickly through the thread), but the Pels O/U being that low may be in part due to Vegas thinking that we may still trade Trey and/or Herb for draft picks.

I'm not saying that the Pels will be good, just saying that if rosters were to be locked right now, that 29.5 win total would almost certainly increase. I'm not a gambler, but I might throw some money on the over, simply to give me a reason to be interested in this season.

What are you talking about?

Literally no one has said they are a playoff team, yet you keep spouting this crap.

Who?
Who has said these guys won’t improve this team, or that they aren’t optimistic by at least Fears/Queens progression in their 2nd year?

The only bright spots about this season are Fears/Queen, and a new coach, with Missi carrying some light optimism.
No one cares about Zion, Murray isn’t part of the future of this team(although like him and think he will make a positive difference) and everyone feels it’s inevitable Trey and Herb will be traded, which I don’t want to see happen.

The negativity isn’t b/c of the players, or the coach. It’s the direction, or lack thereof, this organization seems to be heading this team towards.

2 posters spending paragraphs talking up the Jazz and their future with confident predictions they are better than us and will be good. Then a third poster dropped this line.
quote:

While maybe not a top team, they are likely to be a play-in or playoff team.

Maybe it was a slight exaggeration but you could surely make the deduction between those comments and the amount of convincing that they were trying to lose and can really win every game they play. Should have used "confident they are a play in/ playoff team" and not "guaranteed". Still a lot of praise and excitement for a team that is 70-176 in the last 3 years.
