Speaking of luck falling into their laps, the buy-out market needs a MASSIVE overhaul.

As it stands it's basically a pipeline for glamour markets and super teams to load up cheap vet talent that most of the time, smaller markets had to clog up their rosters with overpays to get there.

That is 100% happening in the next CBA I reckon.

I know this is your shtick and everything. But you could possibly give it a rest.

The Lakers will have a down season or two sometime between now and 2025.

Lebron is old and fading fast. AD is not a leader or alpha and is always injured. They have some rough contracts and a lack of picks or ability to trade.

So there will be a season or two where it won't work out for them, and it could be 2024 or 2025 and that will be beneficial.

But they will also likely not be down long.

Lebron is the type of guy that would retire abruptly just to get attention

I'm sure, but how it will be done is key. Much like the cap.

Which seems to have inadvertently made it even more difficult for smaller teams to compete since mass markets like LA, BRK, and GS could basically pay a 150 million dollar luxury tax and not lose sleep. But small market teams are at a point where they are scared to spend unless all the stars are aligned.

Can they make it so they need to pass through the waiver wire?

Original team pays the buyout and the team claiming them gets them for the minimum?

I really can’t think of how they would do it.

That's probably one of the few ways to do it.

But the unintended consequence of that is that instead of vets getting bought out, these Haves that know they're at the front of the line now would actually start trading for these players before the deadline. So it still doesn't help the small market teams get these guys, but it does help them if they're the team trading the player. So it would be an improvement. It would be better optics and force the Haves to pay for their extra help.

Yea he signed a 2 year extension so he is signed till 22’23. 41m cap hit 21’22 and 44m 22’23. They will have 95m tied up with LeBron, Streetclothes and Kuzma in 2022’23
Yeah, next year they have 110 mil on the books guaranteed with LeBron, AD, KCP, Kuzma, Gasol, and Deng's dead money. They can't sign anyone outside of using the MLE. They don't really have assets to trade for an impact player either, and I don't see anyone really valuing Kuzma or KCP as an asset. They are decent players who are probably slightly overpaid.

Then strangely enough Schroeder might still have them bent over a barrel.

Since he can basically come back to LA with his highest offer and say you guys need to beat it or good luck with Caruso, Austin Rivers, or Raul Neto as your replacement.

Agreed. I don't think many small market teams expect the big name vets to willingly join their team, but the bigger problem is the big market teams not having to pay for them and just sitting back and waiting for them to be bought out.

This at least get's the small market teams some assets back.

Right, he still has leverage. Because they can't effectively replace him with a similar player, due to their cap situation. He's better than a MLE (probably), but definitely not worth 20 mil. But, they aren't really in a position to negotiate that.

Basically how we were with Jrue and Asik tbh. But Schroeder is not the player Jrue was even then.

You love to see it for the Lakers!

Davis and LeBron have a mountain of time to recouperate.

Would have been better if they went deep into the playoffs

And Schroeder signed that bloody extension

Yeah, I think there is a decent chance the 2022 pick is worse for us than it would have been this year. So I would likely trade it now if there is a GM out there that thinks otherwise and we can get something good for it.

That 2025 pick I would need a haul for though.

I keep seeing this and I can see it from one point of view, but I think this is even better. The shine is off the apple. I think this offseason if there's a vet who is considering taking less to go to the Lakers or sign somewhere else, this finish may push them in the other direction.

If they compete (and yes, wear down their bodies more) further into the playoffs this year, then those same vets might think they are the missing piece to get them over the hump.

I think this makes it apparent that they are not just one piece away.

I like the way it ended up. They were humiliated and in general it feels like there's a changing of the guard in the league with the younger guys stepping up and Brooklyn looking to become the new NBA Big Bad. I'm not saying nobody will want to play for them, but they aren't the draw they once were.

I think some folks will be scared off at the possibility of being used as a scapegoat as well. It’s one thing to take less money to go to a title favorite. It’s another to go to an aging, injury prone roster that puts a tremendous amount of pressure on you to outperform your contact or risk taking the brunt of the blame when things don’t work out.
