That's what ESPN told you.

But yeah it would be awesome if Tre Johnson fell to us. I didn't care for his attitude during the NCCAT, but i think he has the most potential to be a star after the top 2 guys. His athleticism with his wingspan is elite and unlike most in this draft class, which gives him a huge advantage offensively. Not saying he's DWade or DMitch, but when a guy is 6'4" with an almost 7' wingspan, that's not normal and it's such a huge advantage to have that wingspan with a body that can be stronger. a 6'4 guy that weighs 200lbs is going to be stronger than the 6'8" weighing 200lbs.

Sadly, it would not surprise me if Johnson were available that the Pels still take Maluach. It would be so typical.

Instead of taking Maluach, I would much rather take a center with our second pick. I even like Ryan Kalkbrenner from Creighton. Nearly 7’1 barefoot. Experienced college player, really strong defender and 19.2 points at 65% from the field. Just a good basketball player that with Missi should solidify our big rotation. Take the swing with that first pick. Johnson, Fears, whoever is there.

The four prospects that come up the most in conversations around the league surrounding the Pelicans are Maluach, Queen, [Jeremiah] Fears, and [Ace] Bailey. While some have said the Pelicans aren't wanting to move up for Bailey, multiple league sources have confirmed that multiple members of the front office are keen on the star potential that Bailey possesses.”

Nothing groundbreaking but still.

I don’t see this. Tre handles the ball better and he’s longer. Also, does he have a debilitating back injury like Hawkins had coming out of college?

Yeah I’m not a huge fan of Johnson. Talented shot maker but literally doesn’t give you a single other skill. Might be one of the only guys in that range that I would prefer Maluach over. Too much Hawkins in his game, if his shot isn’t falling he becomes unplayable.

Well look, I’m not trying to sell everyone on Tre. I like Fears a tremendous amount and think he will be one of the best players from this draft.

That being said, Tre is half a foot taller than Hawkins with 2.5 feet longer wingspan. And he also just turned 19 years old in March, two years younger than when Hawkins came out. I think we missed the signs on Hawkins, who in his time at Connecticut was under 40% from the field in his two seasons.

Additionally, I think it’s the mental mistakes that really hold Hawkins back. I can’t really speak for Tre in that department yet, but Hawkins has continued to struggle with missed switches, over plays and bad rotations.

I feel Tre’s floor is a bigger version of what we thought Hawkins “could” be, if that makes sense.

If Fears is gone, I want Queen. His archetype tend to be too skilled to miss. People are over analyzing his combine numbers. Olynyk is on his last leg and is an expirer and Queen gives you a guy who can be your offensive hub if Williamson once again gets injured or if we need to move on from Williamson after this season.

Maluach and Missi is too similar to each other and would be a waste especially when you probably can't play both guys together.

Tre does have a better handle you’re right. He’s just so bad at a lot of aspects of the game. Idk he’s on the same level as Maluach for me. Theres probably 8 other guys I’d rather have before him and maluach.

Idk how Tre is gonna even get minutes with his lack of defense under Willie. Tre does not give a frick about d. Maybe that changes at the next level and he has good measurables. But the college tape is not good on that end of the ball

I agree he has concerns. I just think he’s definitely a superior prospect to Hawkins, especially with the back issues factored in.

Tre kind of reminds me of a D Lo type player, which can be a great scorer when he’s on fire and a limited player when he’s cold.

Sucks we fell so far in the draft. A guy like Harper would’ve been a great consolation prize and building block.

I agree. He makes 55% off screen 3s and 40% on catch and shoot 3s. With around 7 attempts per game. He will fit perfectly for the pelicans. Hes not really a slasher/driver but you don’t really need it with Zion/Herb. He has the size to defend. I feel he did so much on offense, he had no energy to play defense. It shouldn’t be a problem in the NBA.

lol every year we drafting players to develop in 2-3 years then they never develop or gone before year 2 it’s insanity at this point to keep drafting “projects” we been rebuilding the last 15 years just sale this piece of crap team

Every coach we hire never plays rookies so it doesn’t matter who we draft honestly . They’ll be traded by year 2 and go on to have a great career with another team same story for 20 past years

I understand the Wizards and Nets, but not sure why he would want to come to Pelicans. Regardless, I see no way he lasts to 7 (with 6 being his absolute floor). If by some chance he is available at 7, I would hope we take him just based on potential upside.
