I do like the Green/Tyreke combo, but the more I think about it the more I like the idea of having Mirotic next year to be able to ease Boogie back into the lineup. I think that could be huge.

I prefer Mirotic too. He's more talented with more upside and younger than Green. Niko can carry games if needed unlike Green. He also fits perfectly within our offense. I understand wanting a blue collar guy who plays defense, but Green isn't Draymond. He is not a difference maker on defense and is struggling this year. Also if the past couple of games are any indication we will need another scoring option next year particularly at the beginning of the season and blue collar types can be found for cheaper.

I thought the last two games highlighted the need for a blue collar big. They lost because they got out rebounded. I think it is safe to say if you are able to get either with Asik, it is a win.

I'd rather Green over Mirotic.
I understand people are looking at the present, but with Cousins back, we don't need more offense. I'd rather Green's defense and athleticism.

I can see both options. While we may not need more offense, we could use more spacing.

Niko rebounds at about the same rate defensively as Green. Green just gets more offensive rebounds as he operates a lot closer to the basket. I think the buyout market also provides a backup C who can actually get minutes too.

I hear the Pelicans are on track to offer a 3 year guaranteed contract for well over the minimum for Greg Oden....

That Philly game where they had 3 blue collar bigs annoying the hell out of AD/DC with their non stop hustle outworking the vastly superior AD and Boogie is something that really stood out to me this year. That kind of hustle and energy can be infectious. Niko brings a lot to the table, I just wonder if Green wouldn't be able to have a bigger impact than his skill set would imply because when the Pels are at their worst it's usually a lack of energy more than a lack of scoring. Or rather the lack of scoring comes from the lack of energy.

I get that, but I want to add the most skilled player with the highest upside with our pick. Someone who has to be accounted for and gameplanned. Is more difficult to find than someone who brings energy You can add hungry hustle guys like Liggins for minimums to get that spark if needed. i just don't think Green changes the energy of the team enough to make up for the huge gap in talent between that I see between him and Niko.

ETA - also think Nikos defense is not as bad as people think

Defensively, Mirotic has a reputation as an incapable defender, but that could not be further from the truth. According to Synergy, Mirotic ranks in the 95th percentile in half court defense, allowing only 0.769 points per possession. This matches my eye test. Mirotic has great awareness and knows how to position himself on defense to support the backside, help on drives and contest kick-outs. He is also a phenomenal pick-and-roll container, ranking in the 85th percentile. While he is made to look silly against the speediest point guards, he does the subtle things right.

MM proposed this and god it would be great

quote:

How about this one: Pels get: Mirotic, Dinwiddie, their 2nd round pick back (from Bulls), Magic 2nd round pick (from Nets)

Nets get: Ajinca, Jameer, Pels 2018 first, Pels 2020 first

Bulls get: Asik, Raptors 2018 1st

Pels then sign Monroe

2 2nds helps the G league team

Bulls still get a first and don't have to take ajinca

Nets get paid

Dinwiddie/Rondo/Jackson
Jrue/Moore/Clark
Miller/Hill/Liggins(if brought back ltr)
Monroe/Mirotic/DC
AD/Diallo

My main point in posting that one is... Don't rule out Dell tossing out TWO future firsts in the next week. He is not opposed to that if it sheds his two bigs salaries for next year and gets him guys that help now and could be on solid deals next year too

Veteran scorer Joe Johnson is angling behind the scenes for a trade out of Utah, according to league sources. Will be interesting to see if he becomes a buyout candidate for contenders should no deal materialize before the Feb. 8 trade buzzer

So we have to clear salary before any of these buyout guys are gettable right?

Is it similar to the NFL in that former teams picking up the tab mean they'll sign for cheap?

Yeah, most of these buyout guys will sign for minimum deals with their new team. But you have to have enough cap space, or in our case tax space to do that. You also need roster spots. The Pels currently don't have either so you might see guys like Tony Allen and even one that plays like Jameer Nelson get thrown into a bigger trade to create the roster spot and money needed to add a Greg Monroe.

I would imagine Joe Johnson goes to a team closer to contention and isn't really a consideration for the Pels.

I would not really like that trade at all. I would not give up another 1st for Dinwiddie and a couple 2nds. That reeks of desperation by a lame duck GM to spend future assets for marginal players.

His argument would be marginal talent AND flexibility

You go into next season with the following under contract

Jrue, Moore, Miller, Dinwiddie, Solo, Frank Jackson, Mirotic, AD, Cousins, plus the two cheap 2nd round picks you took, and Cooke. You would also have a few million to spend before you hit the lux tax. The following year, Dinwiddie, Miller and Mirotic come off and Moore and Hill are expirings. Maybe Jackson and/or Diallo and Cooke have turned into assets by then. Maybe you struck gold with one of those 2nd rounders or with your 2019 first that you were pretty much forced to use because you couldn't trade it.

Maybe you were really good in 2018-19 and now free agents want to join you because you might be the one team with a shot at beating the Warriors.

There is no GREAT path, but thats an example of how that path could work out.

What tax threshold projection are you using? I've been using $123 million. $125 is the last actual figure I've seen anyone throw out, but that was tied to the $103 cap projection which was revised down to $101. I assume the tax threshold would come down about $2 million too.

The 2020 first gives you pause in that scenario?

I think revenue is going to jump this year. Ratings are up. All the drama this season seems to be engaging fans. Hopefully the Warriors are at least challenged in the playoffs and we get a 6 or 7 game finals.
