I think you may be on the wrong board.

First of all this is old news. We’ve known this for months.

Second, if the Pelicans are going to stay, they will need a new Arena within the next decade. SKC is an absolute dump.

Third, a new arena attracts bigger events. More all star games. Concerts. Etc.

Last, this is a pelicans board. Beat it.

This makes me feel old. I was a big bulls fan before we got a team and remember when they move to the United Center. On WGN they were selling pieces of the old stadium and I convinced my mom that I needed a piece of the court.

One of the potential sites is on tchoup right across from where the billion dollar river front development is taking place.

The only problem I see with this is that there would need to be some major work done to the expressway because it currently backs up from the bridge to the dome with normal, everyday traffic. The Tchoup exit is already a nightmare because an off ramp specifically for port traffic was never built.

Just tear down the smoothie king center and let them build it in its footstep. You can make do with the Dome for a few years.

I'd love near the river because it'd be closer to home but using the existing site makes the most sense. There's existing infrastructure for parking and support sharing Dome facilities and it's near Benson properties. Razing the SKC leaves a site with no real purpose for anything else as anything they'd put there is isolated from the rest of the city. Finally, while the river site is great for an arena, it can be great for a number of other uses.

this is the only viable option
the jazz played in the dome and drew very well

if the new arena is designed around the existing footprint (and existing deep foundations) it would also cut the cost dramatically

The Pelicans cant/wont play in the Superdome for 5 years.

That would be a nightmare. Especially when the dome itself is in need of its own housekeeping

Its not feasible to play in the Superdome for years, and the league would not go for it.

Its going to be elsewhere. Trust me, I guarantee the Saints/State would find use for the ground where the Arena is.

Put it in the post office footprint then. Needs to be near where it is now.

like what?
are you suggesting that the state pay to demo the blender, and then pay/co-pay to build something else there, and then pay/co-pay for a new arena from scratch?

why build one when you can build three at 3x the cost?

Where are the Pelicans going to play for 2-3 years? Its not going to be the Superdome because the league wouldn't allow it and the Pelicans wouldn't want it. Its not going to be Baton Rouge, either.

2nd, the next evolution of the Superdome "upgrades" is to do sort of what every single new stadium is doing: building an all-encompassing "entertainment complex" near their stadium, with parks and bars and restaurants etc. That's likely what they will eventually do.

Last: They are going to demo the Arena regardless, whether they build it on the same site or not. There's almost certainly no "extra" cost.

So they get to play in the Arena until a new Arena is built elsewhere with no disruption, and then the State/Superdome/Saints get to do whatever they want with that site.

counterpoint...

the bensons already own champions square and the old new orleans centre. when i was at hyatt we had extensive conversations with the benson org about re-development of the centre, the old macy's space in particular. there is AMPLE redevelopment opportunity right there, with the existing infrastructure, for a "lifestyle development" around the dome and arena.

remeber when you could walk from the hyatt to the dome thru the centre? remember how awesome that was?

i will concede that playing in the dome for a couple years would not be ideal...but i'd need to see something other than a message board opinion that the NBA wouldn't allow it.

we (the taxpayers of this state and fans of the team) should not just give up on the dome/area complex without a full value engineering conversation

Huh? It's a large space downtown, there's been quite the expansion of mixed use real estate being built downtown, I'm sure someone would snatch up that land if available for development.

SKC occupies enough space to put 3 new high rises where it is now.

Plenty of investors will be falling over themselves for that land.

I think the ideal thing to do is buy the land where he post office is knock it down, maybe Champions garage if you need more space, then build there. Then you will have open space from SKC to build up your sport complex up. Everything would still be next to each other.
