NBA mulling playoff format change

Obviously this would be for future years, but under this format we'd currently be the 14th seed and looking at a first round matchup vs. Toronto.

Silver said his concept would keep the best eight teams from each conference in the playoffs, but would seed those teams 1-16. In that scenario, if the top two teams were from the same conference, it would set up a possible Finals meeting.

How about just move the Pelicans to the East which only makes sense geographically. There. Problem solved.

We getting rid of divisions and conferences too and just doing a round robin?

Why would the Pelicans move to the East before the grizzlies if you want to whine about geography?

He said travel requirements are one of the things holding this back. If it’s an issue now I don’t see why it would stop being an issue. This seems like either lip service or something they won’t do unless another controversial playoff year where good teams get left out makes the travel concerns not matter.

Make four expansion teams in the West (Seattle, Las Vegas, Mexico City and Vancouver). Then move New Orleans and Memphis to the East. 17 teams on each side..

So add 4 teams to the league so you can justify an easier chance at the playoffs for the Pelicans? pathetic.

I liked the idea of the 5 or 6 region change that came up a few years back

Or LeBron goes West and people don’t care about the East or the Finals.
This travel stuff is BS btw. I find it hard to believe the NBA can’t make something work that puts more unique matchups in the playoffs every year.

Right. The number of playoff games last year impacted the cap negatively this year. Both the league and players get more money if the playoffs are more competitive. And presumably a more competitive playoffs are more valuable to whoever is paying to broadcast them.
We already saw a migration of talent to the west this past offseason. If LeBron goes West like you said, I could see them changing the format for sure.

Needs to happen in the worst way.

There is a problem when OKCis in the same division as Minnesota

Forget Mexico city.
Long flights. No team near.
No.

Yeah, it's as crazy as the continual reports about the NFL expanding to London. It just doesn't make sense because of the travel. I can see why they'd want Mexico City to be the city in Mexico they would try, but you probably have to aim a little lower and go for a big city on the border like Juarez or Tijuana. Those actually aren't bad options because both have US sister cities on the other side of the border without teams, El Paso and San Diego letting you market to 2 cities with 1 team.

Ziller's realignment proposal from 2014 actually hits on playoff travel
and his realignment proposal might make in-season travel less ridiculous. funny enough, he called shortening the preseason and starting the regular season in mid-October to mitigate back to backs.

One legitimate concern with ending conferences and seeding the best 16 teams in the league is that it could lead to nightmare playoff travel. My counterargument would be that you already have some nightmare playoff travel in the West, which (surprise!) benefits elite East teams. Not only do they have a perennially easier path to the Finals due to poor competition beyond the top four teams or so, but they are likely to travel much less in the first three rounds of the playoffs. Sure, Portland-Miami in the first round would make for hellacious travel. But Portland-Houston wasn't exactly a picnic either.

It's not even certain they make the playoffs in a 16 team format

Yeah that map makes a ton of sense
Posted on 2/19/18 at 6:17 pm to corndeaux
give the higher seeded team in the series the choice between 2-2-1-1-1 or 2-3-2. travel problem solved
