I hate it too, but it is the reality we live in.

The new CBA slapped them down a little bit, but not enough.

The reality is, if you draw the line in the sand and say "retire then"...he drags it out so you have no money to spend in FA, he then starts whining, crying, bitching and making a scene until you are basically forced to buy him out.

At that point, you have no shot at any Free Agents, and you are in worse shape than if you just hadn't done the deal at all.

Which is why I think Stern would frick Marion in the arse if he tried this.

He leaned VERY hard on Billups after he and his agent were making threats to retire rather than report to whatever team won his rights through the amnesty bidding.

He pretty much told him "You won't see any of your $9m+ contract money that the Knicks are dumping if you keep fricking around."

I figure the same would happen if Marion opted into the final year of his contract, knowing he had been traded, then refused to report.

This one in particular is WTF-worthy. Shawn Marion is whining and crying about making 5x more money than he's actually worth in a year.

Stern should do something about it then. Make them sit out a year if they force a buyout for refusal to play. Teams need to take a stand and say well retire and frick yourself then.

Different situation with the amnesty. The CBA madness was going on, and Stern was trying to draw a line in the sand on something that was fought hard for, so players couldn't abuse it.

This is a scenario that has happened quite often, unfortunately. Stern can say anything he wants, but the reality would be that Marion will say he's going to refuse to report, and yeah he can get fined, but we are out of 10.7 mill in cap space during the signing period.

That's leverage.

Was this before or after Fisher bullshitted with the Rockets and ended up with OKC?

And to comment on Marion, like Dallas is any fricking good? I give it less than a 5% chance Howard ends up there. He'll be in LAL, LAC, Atlanta, or Houston, before he goes to the Mavs. They're going to clear all of the cap space like last year, and sign a bunch of mediocre players again.

I agree. But unfortunately the way players deal with it is to be twats until they get free money, and get to go play wherever they want.

My solution?

Refuse to pay Marion until he shows up then, when he shows up, play him 48 minutes a night until he either accepts a buyout for pennies on the dollar or retires.

Our front office has been EXCEEDINGLY good with players about sending them out for either pennies on the dollar value-wise or to our financial expense to get playing time elsewhere (Jack, Hakim Warrick, etc.). Marion would be getting this treatment for being an a-hole instead of being reasonable.

If he wants us to buy him out so he can go elsewhere, I have no problems with paying him $3m to go away. That's 1/3 of his salary to go sign with the Heat.

If he wants more than that, despite the fact that he'll have opted-in on his contract AFTER finding out about the trade, I'd have Monty run him up and down the court until his a-hole was sucking buttermilk.

EDIT-

One of the side-effects of doing this would be that we likely end up with a high 2014 draft pick.

The league could claim we were being non-competitive and we could argue back "Hey, we tried to be competitive but the guy we brought in to start for us didn't cooperate. And you assholes didn't seem too interested in helping us out with that."

I'm sure the NBA players union wouldn't have a problem with this at all.

I have little to no use for them after the Hornets got fricked by them for a player refusing to report after being traded back in 2005.

If they have a problem with this, they and the league can find an "accident" with Marion's opt-in, declare him a free agent, and let New Orleans have 100% of their cap space back.

The NBA needs to give them no option. Either retire or sit out and not get paid. I'm sick of the Jim Jacksons of the world dictating where they will play or ask to be bought out so they can join a super team.
