Let's talk about Herb...year 2...

But first, year 1 summation. Preseason, Pels decided that they had to figure a way to get Herb on the court for his defense so they mainly just worked on his C&S 3-pt shooting & not much else, offensively with the goal of keeping Herb from being a net negative on O. I think they succeeded.
Year 2? Unless I'm wrong, the Pels plan to greatly increase Herb's offensive game. He will handle the ball MUCH more & hopefully develope into a solid PG or at least something close to a PG. Given their makeup, Pels don't really need a true old-style PG...Herb wouldn't be trying to replace a CP3 or Steve Nash.
This is a KEY year, for Herb. He will either develope these additional offensive skills OR if he can't... he will just move back outside and be relegated to standing at the 3-pt line & hopefully shooting around 36-37% on C&S 3's.
Bottom line...if Herb ends up ONLY at the 3-pt line...he'll still eventually be a top 100 player in the NBA, but if he is successful at transitioning to the 1 position...he will eventually be a top 50 player in the NBA. I remain VERY optimistic about Herb's 2nd year but learning on the fly, to be a PG in the NBA when you have almost NO experience at the position...is just not a complete stone cold lock...EVEN for Herb. Luckily, playing PG for this particular Pels team is nowhere near as demanding as it is for most other NBA teams.

IMO, he needs to focus on being elite in the corner and being a strong finisher on slashes. We don't need him to learn to be a playmaker, as he is surrounded by several guys that excel at that.

I don't think a lot of people got to see Andre Iguodala in his prime, so the comps people have made of Herb to him haven't really resonated. At his peak he basically averaged 18/5/5 while playing All NBA Defense.
For perspective, Tyreke put up 16/6/5 the year he helped lead the Pels to the playoffs. Now have that Tyreke be an elite defender too. That's what Herb could become. Sorry Dinky, you won't get that reference, but most of the board will.

Point taken but imo, there are just too many negatives to having a dedicated corner 3-pt shooter IF there is a possibility he can succeed in having a more well-rounded offensive game. I would just as soon NEVER see players like Morant or CP3 etc... "hiding" on defense by standing out there with Herb. Or even LeBron, "resting" while standing out there with Herb. Save the corner 3, standstill C&S position for someone else, UNTIL you're sure Herb can't be decent at the 1...once again...jmo.

Herb is too good a ft shooter to not be attacking the rim with his length. Catch and shoot 3s and slashes. That's what we need. Then those dumpoffs to Zion on the slashes will be there.

Herb's got more offense in his game. He did it for Bama. Maybe he can do more with the second unit, but with NOP starting five, he just needs to rebound, move the ball and knock down the occasional open 3. He's not a 1 tho.

I mean, I would rather all five players on the floor be playmakers if possible. Even if Herb is surrounded by great playmakers, our ceiling is much higher if Herb can do more on offense than C&S and get some back door dunks. I want to see Herb get a rebound and run the break; pump fake, drive, and dump to the dunker or kick to a shooter; and even help run the point when Zion and BI are on the bench/injured.

Yeah there is no real downside to Herb improving as a playmaker. Especially seeing as injuries and rest and funks happen to players. Having another guy that can be a connector and occasionally facilitate is a good problem to have.
But it does seem like most of what he is working on is with Vinson and shooting, so I suspect he will mostly be slashing and shooting again this season.

You are not limiting him as a 3pt shooter / slasher, as guys like BI and Zion need exactly that. Not saying he couldn't be more, but there are only so many balls to go around.

IMO herb will get more points in transition due to defense than the half court. Zion, BI, CJ is the primary scoring options in that order.

Strange as it sounds, I saw Herb try the "1" in college & he was absolutely HORRIBLE at it, despite what some may say. BUT, the reasons he was horrible can be easily remedied.
I think Herb will quickly learn to take it to the hoop & FINISH. Either with the layup or the (hopefully developed) floater or the lob pass or the kickout to the open C&S 3. The guy has a VERY interesting upside on the offensive side...and I assume the Pels will take every opportunity to see what it is...before they settle on sticking him at the 3-pt line.

Jones is going to a lot of opportunities to score when you look at how teams are going to defend this team. Defensive coverage will gravitate towards CJ, BI, Zion, and JV. This will allow Jones to have a free lane to get an easy bucket or an easy assist off the penetration as well as opportunities diving to the basket offball outside of spot shooting. Jones should have a very efficient season and I expect Green to coach Herb into taking these opportunities to punish teams.

Herbs work ethic is gonna take him to places I don’t think people realize yet. I was high on him at Bama because he is such a suffocating defender and hated watching lsu against him, but seeing his offense show potential makes this one of the steals of the draft easily.

Gotta admit...LSU had no business losing that SECT final game. Had 3 guys fighting each other for putback to win it. Just got unlucky

Iguodala is an interesting comp.
What about Shawn Marion. Great defender. Do it all.

Iguodala has always been my comp for Herb. Length, defensive tenacity, ball handling, team player, and clutch. Herb’s already a better free throw shooter that was Iguodala’s Achilles heel.

Iggy was built like a Mack truck when he came into the league and Herb is a lot leaner framed, but IMO Herb looks a good bit more cut than he did last season. I guess that maybe shouldn’t be a surprise with the work ethic he is known for, but that is an X factor in addition to his ball skills.
If Herb becomes more powerful as well as more skilled then he has a chance to exceed even the lofty expectations he has already established.
Super excited to see him take another step this season.
