How to gauge where Zion is at

I’ve watched all his Duke games. When he is 100% you will see him intercept passes in the passing lanes with his tremendous short burst speed and 200 IQ. I could always tell when he was 100% in a game when he would stalk the ball on defence ready to jump the route. His bursts are at about 90% compared to where I saw him at Duke. His quickness is 100% but the speed is still a little slower, not by much though.

Probably easier to do against college talent versus the NBA.

He was 275 lbs at Duke before he injured himself. That’s probably what it was to be honest. He’s probably 285 right now. In warmups at Duke he could dunk from the foul line with ease.

He immediately started easily scoring 20+ppg in the NBA. He was just so far ahead of his peers in college. I think he just looks a little different because he is playing against the best players in the world.
He still looks incredibly dominant in such a short time in the NBA.

He has 7 steals
League leader has 8

He still doesn’t look as explosive to me. I know Nelson and crew probably want him to be less explosive to decrease injury risk but that’s 70% as to why he’s so good.

He can only give 110% about 90% of the time. The other 20% of the time, I'm not sure the math works.

A lot of speculative numbers in this thread.

Crazy. Our other big has 6. Those are guard numbers for the 2 big men.

Yea—I just remember him jumping out the gym on every dunk. Now it’s just like regular dunks. Head not even above the rim.

That's good for the knees and conserves energy. He gets way too many dunk opportunities a game and it's not smart to waste all his energy on dunks when he can lay it up and go after offensive rebounds. It's also less of an injury risk in the long run. It's a good strategy and I'm all for it.

I like that he’s taking less riskier dunks and doesn’t high fly as much. But the speed is something I think he can ramp up a bit more from where he’s at now based on what I saw when he peaked at Duke. He had guard level speed he flashed at Duke before his injury. He was probably the fastest player at Duke before his shoe injury.

You need a better handle in the NBA to even be in a position to throw down super explosive dunks.
His handle is better than it was last season but it's still suspect

He had like 5 steals last game playing his 2nd game of 38 minutes in 4 days.
What worries me about Zion is how he fits into a halfcourt offense. Through 3 games we're 23rd in pace compared to being the fastest paced team at times last season.
Zion on the break is already one of the most dangerous players in the league.
Zion in the halfcourt is nothing more than a rebounder right now, which still gets him some points. But it is excruciating watching him set a high screen right now and then just go and stand idle somewhere if the roll to the basket isn't there.
He needs to add a midrange to at least make his defenders honest.

Zion is fine. Y’all need to stop reading Michael McNamara

Zion is a smart kid with really good basketball IQ. We knew this would happen on day where teams are able to take him out of his element especially against well coaches teams. You gotta give him time and experience to adjust. He's going to learn and evolve from it during the season. He's that kind of talent.

Zion will be fine, because he is clearly not a finished product, but among starters he has been 4th (in front Bledsoe) in +/- in the two wins and was last in +/- in the one loss.

No it isn't.
It's not the only way to gauge a player's performance, but it does mean something. Especially when that player is playing the most minutes.

Zion can do no wrong on this board but he leaves a lot to be desired compared to his days at duke. His handle is questionable, can’t shoot, doesn’t look as explosive, and he is as one dimensional as it gets on offense leading to his shot constantly getting blocked.
