So what happens if we win #2 and NYK wins #1?

Do we send AD to NYK for #1 and get Zion/Ja or do we get Ja and Tatum?

I think the knicks would be dumb to trade Zion for AD.

I completely disagree if they land the free agents they want to. AD makes them an instant contender for a title. Zion is a complete unknown and even if he develops into a dominant NBA player, you’re wasting a couple years while he develops.

If they miss on free agency, yes, it would be dumb as hell.

ETA: also anyone that takes Ja over Zion is completely nuts in my opinion.

Zion > Tatum and I love Tatum.

I scoff at the idea that Zion will not be an all star or not be a dominant pf.
He's not a sf.

I guess best case scenario is we win #1 and get Tatum imo:

A team of:

Payton
SSJB Jrue
Tatum
Zion
Oak

is greater than:

Ja
SSJB Jrue
(Some Wing)
Zion
Oak

He could play some SF with the right lineup. A PF like Mirotic next to him could work well.

I know I'm in the minority by disagreeing. I've watched Zion play and I know how talented he is. I know conventional wisdom says "gets the best talent available and figure out the rest later." But my hang-up comes with answering the questions 'who would you put around Zion and what is his role?'

We went through this with AD - is he a 4 or a 5? - for years. And it bit us in the arse because we tried to pair AD with a number of different bigs and it never worked. Tatum on the other hand has a clear position and can play with anyone.

Someone convince me that Zion puts us on a better course than Tatum does. I want to believe he will because his talent is ridiculous, but I struggle

I see Zion kinda like Giannis. When he evolves, he will face guys up from the perimeter and drive hard and be impossible to stop. He could go to the post occasionally and demand the same attention from teams. He will suck the defense in multiple ways, score a ton in the paint and transition and when teams suck in, he will kick out to open shooters.

If you imagine Zion kind of like Giannis on offense and Draymond Green with more athleticism on defense, then you see its not close between him and Tatum. Personally, I don't think it is close. Will he need the right guys around him to win a title? Sure, but who doesn't? Same will be the case for Tatum, who might top at at McGrady if he is lucky and we all know how much T Mac would/did need to possibly win a title

Is it fair to say the Zion’s ceiling is Giannis and his floor is A. Stoudamire?

I could see an argument for Tatum vs Zion (id go Zion and I LOVE Tatum as a trade acquisition) but I don’t see one for Zion vs Morant or Morant vs Tatum.

For every Lillard/Curry, there’s a Dunn/Fultz and a bunch inbetween like Jamal Murray/CJ McCollum etc. Give me the generational talent or the proven top 5-10 SF (that’s his floor) over the unknown PG prospect with a spotty jumper. If Morant had shown the range in college, I’d put him in the conversation.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ll be ecstatic if Morant is a Pel. I just wouldn’t take him over Tatum or Zion.

Choosing between Tatum and Zion shouldnt even be a discussion. Tatum is probably a 20-22 ppg low end all star. Nothing wrong with that. All stars dont grow on trees and getting him would be great. I see Zion as a possible generational talent. Once in a lifetime talent. That final five minutes vs UNC the other night was scary.

Again, I’d take Zion but acting like Tatum is a 20-22 PPG low end all star as his ceiling seems a little harsh. He has the game to develop into a 2nd or 3rd team all NBA player or even be the go to scorer late on a good team.

That last skill is something Pels fans know all too well that it’s something you sure as hell don’t take for granted. As high as I am on Zion, I don’t think being a closer will be part of his game or at least not being a closer on a very competitive team.

What if it is

Zion

or

Tatum + Smart or Brown + Kings pick + Clippers pick

I dont know. Of course on paper the Boston package looks better but the season ticket holder in me wants to go watch Zion every night. If the pelicans are 30-33 next year through 63 games but have Zion id still be stoked about going to games. Not sure if Tatum does that for me. Id be happy either way though.

I wouldn't assume the Lakers trade us the top pick if they land at #1. I think there's a chance that could actually wind up hurting us. From their perspective, they just need to wait 12 months and they can pair Zion and AD w/LeBron without having to give up anything. This gives them a present + future.

I think the Lakers landing the top pick is a disaster for us as well honestly.
