I personally would go with a completely different name than .net I guess for a blog it may not matter much, but you really don't want someone squatting on the .com version of your brand.

there's some supreme court ruling that doesn't allow people to pick up domain names and not use them. so the people on 247 have every right to sue for the name if whatever troll doesn't use it.

Just like you pointed out though, they had enough time and "insider knowledge" to pick up the domain before this happened.
All I see is

All he'd have to do to use it though is post a few articles. If the guy isn't using the domain they might actually be able to through the domain dispute arbitration process, but that costs thousands of dollars. Still, if they have any legal claim it's to Hornets247, not NewOrleansNBATeam247 Joe is probably going to have to decide what's more expensive, paying the squatter, fighting the squatter, or rebranding.

Jordan and Dalton.. you 2 bring the hornets heat on twitter
Posted on 3/1/13 at 10:29 am to RonFNSwanson
They should just change the name of the blog to something else. Lots of other teams Truehoop network blogs are good names, like "Three shades of Blue" "8 points 9 seconds" or "knickerblogger"
Hornets247 is a good site, the name is not.

Yeah, the notion of thinking about nothing but the Hornets 24 hours a day 7 days a week is pretty absurd. I mean I am as big of a fan as they come but come on.

My take is:
Why would those who knew first not take of this? Lack of interest. Plain and simple.
Truth is, the 247 thing is kind of meh.
There are other names that have been bought up and more being bought up that lack 247.
This decision was made the day after Benson informally announced his desire to rebrand.
aturnofthekrewe was a favorite for a krewe website at that time. sadly, brassballs is too unprofessional.
I think Joe does doesn't like the principle of it. I don't either, but it affects to site zero given the prior decision to rebrand. There was even talk of doing it this season, but the time is better spent deciding which name is best among those totally available.

8 points 9 seconds is precisely the name that helped decide to change the monicker.

That makes sense. Are all the candidates PelicansSomethingOrOther?

Any idiot can see the wise move would just be Pelicans237 now.

Gerrity and McNamara prove time and time again that they have no tact whatsoever, their information is good but it may not be worth trying to decipher it through all the bullshite they post.
There was absolutely zero reason for him to do this on twitter. He just comes off as whiny and unprofessional.

None of mine are.
There are a few reasons for this, but one is the inability for the team, if they choose, to force a name change later by claiming we are unlawfully using their (NBA's and theythe use it) trademark.
Better to just break from it.
This advice came from a senior team official. People pay lots of money to use Saints on their stuff to make more money. An upset team could claim their sponsors are unhappy with someome using it for free, yada yada yada.
Not that the site makes money. It makes very little and that goes into running stuff, throwing parties, etc. All time is volunteered.
Just one less thing to worry about. Plus, it de-boxes the name. More possibilities. Fun ones.

Hornets Report / Pelicans Report is another entity, but clearly he bought that early.
Again, why not buy the other one? Lack of interest.
The day after Benson did his announcement, so 4/14, we listed Krewe, Voodoo, Brass, and Pelicans as the top candidates, with Night(s), Breakers, and Saints as long shots (personal communication, pure reasoned speculation). Clearly, action was taken on those of interest.
The 247 ones were not of interest.
Two different organizations with different people running them. One person in both structures is common.
I'm not getting into the twitter actions or comments . . . I'm just commenting on the events in the background regarding naming.

I saw that. It was a lob to Rohan from At the Hive.
It's his for the taking.
I think it's cute, and I'd embrace it, but I have others I prefer.
Particularly, I'm wanting one that is more New Orleans oriented, less Pelicans oriented.
BirdWrites to us right now says "Pelicans, not Hornets" but it also says "Celtics," "Pacers," and "Hawks" at least.
I want something that is a less full-frontal version of yatbasketball.com, but that is just me.
