Looks like it was a prerequisite of the job:

Pelicans owner Gayle Benson said all of the interview candidates for the Pelicans director of basketball operations job agreed to keep Alvin Gentry on as head coach. “They all agreed he’s a quality coach,” she said.

That's disturbing that Gayle and crew would make that a prerequisite for the new hire. It shows a strange order of priorities for the owner.

Not thrilled with that particular news.

Choosing to keep Gentry for now because there are bigger problems to fix is one thing.

Gayle basically saying "Gentry stays no matter what" just smacks of undermining autonomy of the POBO out of the gate.

...

And on the other end of the spectrum, league sources are shocked and elated that the Lakers are trying to find a coach first and a team president second.

They also feel that Monty has the inside track there because Jeannie Buss seems adamantly against making Lue the coach because it appears to give LeBron too much power.

I hope Monty does not become Lebron's next stooge.

Not all that different from us, really. We just happened to hire a respected pobo

When I say "other end of the spectrum", I mean "One team who is looking long term and one team who is slapping bandaids on a sucking chest wound".

We know we're a flawed organization and are trying to fix that.

The Lakers? Jeannie Buss is insane and thinks that they are a few tweaks away from being her dad's Lakers again. Ain't happening.

I see. Lakers exceptionalism and insisting on only hiring people with connections to the team will always hold them back.

Was it? That seems like a big jump from the quote by Gayle.

Really

Gentry was in PHO when Griffin was there, and Griffin interviewed him for the CLE job that Blatt eventually got. Im sure his opinion was heard on Gentry

The man is horrible at several aspects of coaching but he is a leader. That won't happen.

It could be something where they would like them to not be extremely fast in a new coaching hire. Also what if there were mutual acknowledgement of Gentry’s short term value as a coach helping them through organizational changes ang long term value in a role in the front office.

I posted about this earlier this week. It doesn't make sense for the new FO to come in firing everyone when they have much bigger fish to fry. We are in a transition year now. Get through that and the AD trade, then figure out what to do at HC next summer.

Not at all:

quote:

They agreed to keep him on after Gayle asked them to.

pretty simple.
