He catches hell all the time (often warranted), but this team could have easily quit. 13 game losing streak, no chance at continuity with every player on the roster having missed 5 or more games with the exception of Hayes, and yet they are still out there grinding for one another. Say what you will about Al, but he deserves some credit for keeping that locker room together.

This is a very good staff overall and Brandon Ingram becoming the closer will make Gentry look a lot smarter.

Why does it matter though? Gentry is a placeholder until we get a team that we want to win.

Gentry was looking at probably being fired to the team playing very well. I am happy they are getting better right now.

He deserves every bit of the credit he could possibly receive. This team could've quit on him and they did not. After losing 13 straight everyone expected him to be fired and for this team to just pack it in and call it a year. But they rallied and found their swagger and now will almost assuredly be in contention to make the playoffs if this team remains healthy. Cannot wait to see whats in store the rest of the way out.

Players also have always liked him a whole lot and maybe if this talent develop like they are hyped to be he could be fine for us. Gentry has always been a very likable person and I would love him to succeed but in 2 or 3 years this team will be full of great players and it will be interesting to see how he does.

Hopefully he's in the FO and off the sidelines in 2-3 years.

My biggest issue with him has been he asks way too much of players/teams out the gate while not being the most disciplined manager of time and people. Made worse is he is often doing so to really young teams without a lot of experience together.

And I think that is reflective in his consistent slow, janky, frustrating starts to pretty much every season.

He wants perfect basketball: pace like the Nash Suns, decision-making on the break like the peak Warriors(but with even less turnovers than they commit), three point shooting like the Rockets, passing like the ultra efficient Spurs team that wiped out the Heat. Then on defense he asks for fast pace and tenacious dedication, and this year to execute a much more complex defensive system. In a coaching environment that is much more laid back and seemingly less intensely focused then most.

To me it isn’t a surprise that the net benefit was suddenly a major positive when Gentry and Co. took to heart the constructive criticism of the players(I think way too late into the season) and dialed some stuff back and made some compromises.

But he gets credit for not letting his ego get in the way and for keeping this team from emotionally falling apart. Adjusting his rotations to better align with what was working and what wasn’t. For tweaking his team system overall, if a bit later than he should have, and doing so in a way that has effectively turned us into one of the hottest teams in the league without two, sometimes three or four, of our best 5 players.

If you sit behind the bench and listen Gentry sounds like he would be an awful coach. But if you watch the games, the effort of our guys, and the way we attack mismatches, I got a lot of respect for him. I think he is a hair above middle of the pack, not too shabby.
Use to make fun of him just yelling "play hard". Now I'm like, man that must work, cuz our guys play hard.

I tried to tell folks to just wait until the team got healthier.

Practically whole new team.
Zion, Favors, Ingram, Lonzo, Jrue...practically the whole team missed a ton of time to start the year. There was no reason for the overreaction until Favors and Zion got back.
Even if injuries didn’t happen it was going to take time to figure out the rotations and for all the new folks to get used to each other.

“Fire Gentry” was always a huge overreaction.

While it is true that we were a mostly new team with injuries aplenty, Gentry has a proven poor track record. To act like the "fire Gentry" talk was solely based off of this year is disingenuous

works for me.
Optimum ceiling.

Expect the best.

Fwiw a lot of those warrior turnovers were people trying to entertain and make espn highlight reel rather than making the best basketball play.
They had a 7 foot eastern euro palooka trying to globetrotter. Kerr finally sat his arse.

It’s not an either/or, it’s how you go about getting to your optimal ceiling.

I prefer not struggling out the gate every year because you demand too much, too soon, while failing to adequately help recognize or develop the necessary chemistry and baseline competency to execute your “perfect” system out the gate. Being too stubborn out the gate in adjusting the system down to help lift people up as you work toward your goal as opposed to getting red in the eye because your team isn’t “executing” your perfect system perfectly out the gate.

I mean we have enough of a record to see what Gentry’s strengths and weaknesses are. When he has a veteran team with developed chemistry he can help elevate a team to another level(Phoenix squad), when he lacks that he struggles relative to his peers out the gate.

He’s not a great coach, but circumstantially he can be an above average one when the conditions and surrounding support are right.

Uncle Al has always done a good job steering the ship through rough waters. That is why he is going to make a hell of an embassador for this team in the near future.

They literally started last year 4-0 while beating the shite of everyone. Then Payton went down and the thin roster revealed itself.

This was a brand new roster with many young players. Finding quality rotations was one of the big questions coming into the year. That was going to take time, then injuries complicated things further.

Perhaps they could have changed what they were demanding of players; perhaps making those demands has helped them perform better now.

Thinking short term is the reason this franchise has been garbage for a decade.

He's not a great coach. He was not handed a veteran team with developed chemistry, yet we've seen him elevate this team to another level the past 15-20 games.

If we were happy to crucify him and his approach for the terrible results earlier, then we should be happy to praise him and his approach for the better ones now.
