Exploring a Luka for Zion swap

First off, I dont want to trade Zion.
Secondly, I dont want to trade Zion.
However, there needs to be a plan in place in the even you have exhausted all means of retention.
The absolute best case scenario is Dallas and NOLA do a Grumpy Star for Grumpy Star Swap. Would probably also require a pick or 2.
What would the team look like? Well not that damn bad when you think about it!
Herb
Luka
BI
Trey
(Turner) I think we make another move to try and get him if possible
CJ (Super 6th Man)
Jose
EJ
Larry
(Insert Someone here during the season)
+ Karlo Matkovic as our 3rd Euro Big we all love to keep on the roster.
Some others mentioned Gafford from Washington (or my person favorite Nic Claxton from BRKLYN) as our rim protecting 5 if Turner is not available.
The question becomes not about fit but keeping Luka in the long term as we would essentially be giving up a 5 year flexability for a 3 year window with a PO for the 4th.
However, our offense would with the critical ascenion of Trey Murphy III would be potent, contain actual leathal shooters, and could even dare I say hang with the Warriors??
Oddly enough if Zion were to leave, it would not be BI's growth that would be critical. Our Championship aspirations would come down to Trey becoming Klay and Herb stepping further into the Draymond Role.
Anyways, I hope that Zion still comes through for the Pelicans as he gives the ultimate upside in terms of Championship aspirations and length of time under contract in New Orleans.

I just don't think Dallas would do it.

I honestly think they are in a similar boat right now and the 5 years would be a juicy thing. Easy sell for the market too.

You really think they would give up Luka for Zion? Zion hasn’t seen the court his entire NBA career. I’m not sure Dallas takes that gamble. Luka can do what ever other disgruntled NBA star does and force a trade to the whatever team he wants and he isn’t choosing the Pelicans.

I have no idea what a Zion trade looks like.
Probably some crap sandwich like KAT or Trae Young.

I think Marc Cuban is a wild card and his team would need a focal point, and quite frankly I think outside of a KD deal that Brooklyn got, his best selling point is getting and gambling on a potential generational talent.
It would be different if Zion didnt show it. However, when he is healthy hes a 1 of 1.

I think it was Windy's podcast with the guy that covers the Mavs a few weeks ago that said Cuban had been conspicuously less involved this year than normal.
As for the trade, the Mavs would need to believe:
1) They could manage Zion's injuries better. And maybe they think Aaron Nelson sucks too and believes that.
2) Zion + a few picks is really a better situation than Luka with no picks. It seems pretty similar to me only you don't have a prior relationship to lean on.
It's honestly the best value either team is likely to get if they felt they had to trade their star, I just don't see either side wanting to pull the trigger on a deal like that.

Dallas is not trading Luka.
If it did, you would have to throw in several first-rounders to make that deal. Dallas can easily get a Godfather offer for Luka from several teams. I'm talking 5 first-rounders, pick swaps and players.

I don't see why the Pels wouldn't. I don't think Luka's style will win a title, but at least he plays.

$30M/yr sixth man...I would move CJ as well if you're moving him out of the starting lineup. Luka and Jose are your ball handlers. Get another shooter instead.

what players? If you aren't getting an all-star back, then that's a shitty trade.
healthy Zion is better than 10 first round picks.

shite, I'll trade BI AND zion for Luka!

Hey sure, if you want to trade Zion, you call up Cuban and ask, do your due diligence. But there is a 0.0% chance Cuban trades Luka for any realistic trade offer this offseason, so it's only a fun fantasy scenario that will never ever ever have any chance of happening this offseason.

In this fantasy scenario, there is no world where Cuban is giving you Luka and not getting Trey back in that deal as well. None.
Your thought that it would be Luka for Zion and a pick or 2 is so far off base, man. It would be Zion/Herb/Trey and about probably 4 picks for Dallas to get fair value for Luka, if we're being truly unbiased here.
Posted on 4/12/23 at 1:13 pm to BigPerm30
quote:No chance this offseason. It would be next offseason if Luka threw a huge fit and demanded a trade, and even then, Cuban could be the 1 hard headed owner that decides to call his bluff.
You really think they would give up Luka for Zion?
quote:That's why it wouldn't be Zion and a pick or 2, it would be Zion+all our good young talen+ a shite ton of picks for it to remotely make sense for Dallas.
Zion hasn’t seen the court his entire NBA career. I’m not sure Dallas takes that gamble
quote:We're just in the hypothetical phase of talking a trade, but this is obviously true as well. Luka won't want to come here, therefore it doesn't matter if we can top any offer out there. If he doesn't want to come here, he's not coming here. That's just how it works in the NBA with disgruntled stars.
Luka can do what ever other disgruntled NBA star does and force a trade to the whatever team he wants and he isn’t choosing the Pelicans.

Dallas will want it all for Luka, and rightfully so.
I think one thing we're ignoring, it's not just Luka's value being higher than Zion who is always injured. Even when Zion is healthy, as good as he is, he is still decidedly not as good as Luka Doncic.

They'd be getting just Zion. No guarantee of anything with a "healthy Zion"

Not true at all.
Zion prior to injury was a leading candidate for MVP.
There's maybe 2 packages out there that can beat Zion + Picks. We say this all the time, the team with the better player usually gets the shittier end of the stick. However, in this trade, both teams still get a 1 of 1. Which is kinda unheard of.
If you dont think a healthy Zion is Top 5 player in the league, that can be another discussion.
