Do Jonas and Herb fit with this team anymore

Our biggest weaknesses are so obvious. Zero shot blocking or rim protection.

No outside shooting.

The roster needs shooters around Zion and someone who can make up for his lack of size defensively.

We have too many wings that can't shoot.

If you had asked me at the beginning of the season about trading either one of those guys, I would have been against it.

Now, I think they both need to go.

I've reached my end point with Herb's lack of shooting and Jonas cement feet and offensive fouls.

I’ve always said Jonas will eventually have to be replaced. Maybe not necessarily upgraded, but a lot of the things he was originally brought in for are now done by guys added after.

I’m “okay” with losing Jonas and going down that rabbit hole to chase greater glory. Herb Jones value is far too great to throw away. The intangibles he brings to the table shouldn’t be overshadowed or are easily replaced. We have enough valuable assets to where time is on our side with regards to Herb’s development.

Even for as bad as Herb has been on the offensive end this season, he has still shown that he can frustrate some of the game's best scorers. You don't give up on that a year and a half in.

I would say no to both, but it’s certainly contract related.

JV is an easier call IMO, because JV is a highly productive rebounder (which isn’t Zion’s or the other guy’s strong suit) and is a rare banger that can actually shoot some from deep. He isn’t an elite run/jump athlete, but if he was a lot more athletic, then he would be Joel Embiid and cost a fortune and be impossible to keep. JV does need weak side help behind him to effectively protect the rim, but Zion was getting better at that before the injury and the Pels can likely (and need to) find a complimentary 4 for the bench that can fill that role when Zion is out.

Herb is such a good defender and has shown enough flashes of offensive skills before, that you keep him, but he needs to be a cost effective D skill specific player, that is used as a disruptor (much like Jose), unless he takes a step forward shooting.

For $15-17mm those guys bring a lot of value on the court, they just need to be part of more balanced group than the Pels have shown. Swap some guys on the back of the roster for a bit more size and shooting is optimal IMO and can still be done without mortgaging the future.

JV doesn’t fit with the team and hasn’t since we traded for CJ.

You can never have too many wing defenders.

This team would be much better with a center at Jonas’ level, but who specializes in defense rather than offense.

ETA: funny that this is getting downvotes, if you have a team that is built around 3 20+ per game scorers, you need to surround those guys with defensive minded role players. It make no sense to have an offensive minded center paired with the other 3 offensive players.

The only issue is his cost…both in acquisition cost and his nearly $20mm salary.

Herb is under $2mm, so his salary is functionally irrelevant to most acquisitions.

But it’s worth noting that even vs OG, Herb still gives you more offensive rebounds, and assists with almost everything else being virtually equal, except the 3pt shooting. And we still have Naji, Dyson, and Trey that all can play that position.

That’s a ton of wings, particularly when we just got absolutely destroyed by an elite PF and hammered on the boards again, while the Pels literally only have two PFs on the roster, and although one is hurt, the other is untrusted by the coaches enough that he is still a DNP risk every game.

Not necessarily anyone that is available. But that doesn't discount the fact that he isn't a fit with the team.

That's the issue with Jonas. We don't have any reasonable options to replace what he does do, and any potential options would be insanely expensive. Turner just got a 2-year extension in Indiana so that door is now closed, too.

probably a combination of young players, picks, and help from a 3rd team. you just waiting on me to say something wrong so you can argue?

if you can get a better player to replace the 5th best starter on your team, you do it. sorry if that’s offensive

the exception would be if the starting team is cooking and play well together.
that is not the case as jv and zion are out.
