Brandon Ingram honest with @JenHale504 after the game about the Pelicans defense. He said “we are still sh** on defense” and said they gotta get better and it’s on him, CJ and Zion

Glad he’s calling out the other 2 guys. Hope defense gets better from now on!

This also means something cause BI has really stepped up defensively since about 2/3rds way through last season on that end.

I would nitpick and say his early season defense also isn’t up to par with his later season defense last year, but at the same time I’ve seen him preemptively over help Zion and CJ so part of it may be those guys need to pick up the slack so he can focus on his defensive positioning

But I also in the back of my mind wonder if Griff is gonna bite the bullet and trade Jonas and picks for Turner and pieces. That game really felt like one of those games that we see an article written 8 months from now about how X player always made an impression when they played us, cause Turner seems to do that against us. Same way Lonzo played his arse off against Chicago and CJ had some big games against us.

I think he has been good this year. Best since he's been a pel for sure

What I saw last night was good rotation/help for BI. One other thing that is a big deal is BI is now strong enough to hold his own against bigs on a switch. He's so long that he's able to get a hand in their face and he's also getting more rebounds.

Basically BI and Trey are the only wing defenders that can switch onto bigs and not get out sized like middle schoolers. It just makes a big difference in the effectiveness of the defense if the other team isn't playing small. Depth here is a hole in the team that needs to be addressed through a Jaxson trade. Although I'll also say that Dyson looked surprising long and effective against bigs in limited minutes.

Well there were two key offensive rebound buckets from the Bulls last night in the 4th that were a direct result of B.I. not boxing out his man.

Willie really needs to find a way to get Dyson on the court more often (hint: use Graham or Naji’s minutes).

I forget who I was going back and forth with the other night but they were arguing our defense sucks because of Zion and B.I.

B.I. has been good defensively for a while now. Even better this year. His help defense has been better so he's reading offenses better. Even more so he is really good at just staying in front of his man. And at B.I. length, just being able to stay in front of someone is a big deal. That's part of what makes Durant such a good defender too.

Want to know what's surprising? Zion is only second to Nance in drtg and it's by 0.01. Zion is also the leader of the team in defensive winshares.

Maybe we are focusing too much on the 5% of his overall play where he looks absolutely horrible and disregarding the 95% of the other possessions where he's been good. Boggled my mind when I looked it up.

A lot of weird things with early season data.

Our offense is MUCH worse when Zion is in the game, and our defense is MUCH better when he is in the game.

Not sure I appreciate cutting to my man Herb...right when BI says "We are still sh** on defense" (G)...but I gotta admit, I had my doubts about BI on the defensive end...but he seems to have increased his effort level & I think he's gonna come around & be a solid defender eventually.

now I don’t think BI is going to be getting Tatum comparisons on that end any time soon, but BI has been solid enough imo, with a lot of things like you mention that make him a positive. Still think there is another level to him as a defender he could become(and has shown flashes when he wants to), but I don’t think BI is the issue, or an issue at all really. At least up to this point.

IMO just a reminder that you have sometimes take early season metrics with a bit of salt.

Thought BI played very solid on defense and particularly good at defensive rebounding yesterday. There were a balls he rebounded that I didn’t think he would have come up with last year

Zion talks about his defense

He told the media to rate his defense and someone said B-. He said he can accept that. Glad he’s taking criticism as fuel to become better.

Don't ask how but per Twitter...
quote:

The Pelicans are posting a 105.3 defensive rating with Zion on the floor this season.

That would be 2nd in the entire NBA.

In addition to the 105.3 when Zion is on, that drops to 112.8 when he's off.

Crazier still, Zion and CJ have played more minutes together than any other 2 man combo at 282. CJ has similarly great on/off DRtg numbers. 106.2 On and 115.2 off. I will say I've been impressed with CJ's defense this year. Not that it's been good, but it's been passable which is better than I expected.

I think the explanation to the numbers is probably that Zion and CJ have been playing against 2nd units a lot. We saw similar defensive numbers for Zion post ASB in the SVG season once Point Zion got to start running the 2nd unit.

Seems that this should be an easy calculation and the same across sites, right?

I'm seeing 109.7 when Zion is on the court from BRref. I assume the tweet(David Fisher) is using NBA.com but anyone know why there would be such a large discrepancy?

No doubt. And last night, it was legit good. 7 rebounds, 7 assists. He made a great impact without his shot last night.
