After his first few summer league games it was pretty clear that it doesn’t justify him being on the floor.

it happens often

not to guys that get significant minutes like Hawkins did his first 2 years.

Kobe Bufkin was selected right after Hawkins
He barely saw the court in his first 2 seasons, playing in just 27 games in 2 years.
Jett Howard was picked 3 spots before Hawkins. He played in 78 games in 2 years at less than 10mpg.
Those are examples of lottery guys who's 4th year option wasn't picked up

Hawkins played 123 games and averaged almost 10ppg, with known back issues that held him back. That's not a guy you give up on after 2 years. Bufkin and Howard are. Find me an article that says we shouldn't have picked up his 4th year option after that 2nd year.

Anthony Black, the 6th pick, had a very similar first 2 years as Hawkins in games played, minutes, points, shooting %. They picked up his option, like a normal team would, and he had a bit of a breakout season last year.

No point in using assets to dump him at this point. ZERO. More incompetence.

Agreed. The only reason you dump him right now is if you have another move already lined up like a sign and trade for Mathurin. Otherwise keep Hawks expiring 7m. That combined with Poole gives you 41m in expiring money to use at the deadline

We can send $34M Poole out and take back $42M without sending out Hawkins, and that's likely a lot more attractive to teams shedding a $40M salary than taking back the same amount they send out.

We can also trade both Hawk/ Poole and take back up to $50mil.

Or if you max the NTMLE we could take back (1) player for $15mil and (1) up to $35mil

Would you trade Poole/Hawkins for MPJ, assuming it might take a 1st or 2 to get him, and you have to give him a large extension, likely 4/$200M?

If you wanted a high volume efficient 3P shooter, there aren't many better than him in that role.

I personally don't care for him, and wouldn't want to pay him that much. He's a low IQ player who isn't really a good defender or rebounder despite having the size and ability to be elite at both.
I'd trade Zion straight up for him in a heartbeat.

I'd only do it if we were still able to upgrade center. But we would have less than $10mil to do that.

Would I let go of Herb to add MPJ and a guy like M Turner? Probably. But at the cost I'd rather make a move to shift the timeline.

I’d trade Zion for him in a heartbeat but I’m not giving up picks for MPJ

Like i said, i think a move like this is saying we are wanting to go sign Bennedict Mathurin using the full MLE, which can only happen if we dump Hawkins salary.

Which the Clippers would immediately match, then we would have to give up a 1st to get them to not match.

Same scenario as Devonte Graham

Yep. But I could totally see Dumars doing that and trying to sell it as his big splash move for the offseason. Mathurin is fine but he’s not moving the needle one way or the other

Flip it...

Would you want to give up picks to obtain Jordan Hawkins?

If the answer is no, then why would any NBA team?

This is what I always mean when it comes to further consequences down the road, no matter how small the move is...

That extra $7m would allow us to use MLE right now or maybe we already would have at this point in the offseason. Picking up his option was never the right move.

You think we guaranteed his deal so that we can give up a pick to get rid of him?
I sure in the hell hope not. However, nothing would surprise me anymore with this front office.

We'll always have those two back to back Dallas games a few years ago where he looked like Ray Allen.

Picks(s) is very broad. Giving up (1) 2nd rd pick for a year with a failed lottery pick?

A 2nd rd pick could easily be a 2 way player or unplayable. For a team not expecting to win and planning to develop assets it doesn't seem that crazy.

But again we have no reason to do this or give up assets in order to do it. So the only reason is because either that team actually wants him or we already have another move planned out.

We don't give up an asset with Hawk not knowing what it costs to get Mathurin.

its not often teams don't give lottery picks their 4th year option. you have to really really suck after your first 2 years for that to not happen
Not sure that is the case anymore. It was pretty much a no brainer to decline his option given how poorly he had played even when given minutes.

Mavericks just did the same with Jett Howard last year and he signed a two-way with Dallas.

Kobe Bufkin is another one.

For a team that has little room for error it does. Every move, deservingly or not, must be in the right direction or else it sets you back.

Drafting Hawk in the first place wasn't the best move but that's obviously 20/20 in hindsight.

I follow you're logic if another move had been planned and executed not long after the option was exercised. Here we are a year later with little to no options of improving the roster.

Again, each move in a vacuum is whatever, but in totality? Team has regressed and given itself little room for error.

Right, which is exactly why we should wait to see how this plays out because it doesn't make logical sense with what is being discussed.

Not only did we not have to sign Hawk but we have 0 reasons to give up assets to trade him. We are not in the tax and there's not many players who could make a difference with what's left.

It doesn't make sense because there's more to it one way or the other.
