Sounds like we’re trying to dump him. Grizzlies have an exception large enough to take him. Will probably cost a couple 2nds. That would give us ~15m under the tax but free agents are extremely limited at this point

This was the full quote from Stein

quote:

League sources say that New Orleans has been exploring various trade frameworks to send out former lottery pick Jordan Hawkins for some potential roster and financial flexibility. Those discussions, sources say, include conversations with Memphis. There was no trade agreement as of Wednesday night, but we're told that the Grizzlies have registered some interest in taking on Hawkins

He’s shoots 36 % from the field. I would trade him for peanuts

So glad we decided to pick up his team option for this season just to now potentially give up assets to dump him. Dumar Masterclass.

You think we guaranteed his deal so that we can give up a pick to get rid of him?

So y'all will give him credit when he gets a 2nd right? Come back here and say Dumars did great?

The fact that y'all even came up with "potentially" and "sounds like" is wild.

even though i don't care about 2nds, it would be beyond retarded to dump Hawkins and use any assets to do so.

It seems they would be doing this so they could have access to the full MLE ($15M)
I don't know who they hell they would be targeting as their aren't a ton of decent FA's out there, at least not that would want to come here.

Harden
Beal
Westbrook
DeRozan
Kuminga
Jalen Duren is still out there but he's wanting a lot more than MLE money.

Maybe Mathurin i guess. I think he's looking for a 3-4 year deal in that $15M a year range.

They guaranteed it before the start of last season. Dumars probably wanted to take a look at Hawk himself. Then realized he’s trash and now is going to dump him to get some flexibility. We did the exact same thing with Kira

Or they guaranteed him knowing that they can atleast get a 2nd instead of letting a lottery pick walk for nothing.

No we didn't. We were in the Tax with Kira. This doesn't frick with Gayles bottom line. Not even close to the same.

Its the other way around in this CBA. Teams are giving up 2nds to dump players at an incredibly high rate. Teams aren't giving up 2nds to receive bums

I think the point he was making was that both Kira and Hawkins had their last year guaranteed 2 seasons before. So we didn't guarantee the contract this offseason then traded them a few months later. We guaranteed their contracts two years before, and in both cases was the right thing to do.

Like i said, i think a move like this is saying we are wanting to go sign Bennedict Mathurin using the full MLE, which can only happen if we dump Hawkins salary.

Guaranteeing Hawkins another year was absolutely not the right thing to do, and pretty much everyone said it at the time

It did not need to be done at all

its not often teams don't give lottery picks their 4th year option. you have to really really suck after your first 2 years for that to not happen. I seriously doubt anyone was saying we shouldn't have picked up that option after his 2nd year in the league.

It's been happening more frequently in the new CBA. Teams are less likely to give out that 4th year option and will give up on a player much faster due to apron constraints.

Depends on if we took calls for him last year. If several teams called with interest then it makes sense. If we do give up assets then I'd agree.

Kira was different though. That move was made because we were in the tax. I highly doubt ee give up assets to movr him if we didn't have to.

While that’s true, Hawkins was the exception. He was drafted to do one thing, shoot. He didn’t even have potential for any other skills. After his first two years it was pretty clear that he doesn’t make 3s at a high enough % to justify him being on the floor. At that point you cut bait and sign a shooter for the minimum
