Griff is going to get fired for this.

YOu can't start the season with a center who could'nt get playing time last year at two different stops, and is undersized.
and you can't pay the tax with this incomplete looking roster.

Obviously there's still plenty of time left to make the right adustments, but tradiing someone just to get under the tax and make us worse, is also a fireable offense in this situation.

Agreed. It makes zero sense to refuse to pay the tax for years and then decide to pay the tax for this roster. A trade is still going to happen, and the only moves that make sense are trading BI or trading CJ (CJ is much less likely), or trading a pick to bring a center into an exception that we have.

This appears to be a short term thing but platooning at center while dominating at the other positions can still win us games in the regular season.

Platooning at Center is probably the easiest position to cover up in this era. You can play a lot of Small Ball with guys like Zion and Trey at "Center".

However, I'm not sure I envisioned the platooning to be this bad.

Teams are going to attack the paint relentlessly.

I agree, and i'm all on board with trying to go small ball as much as we can.

I"m probably the biggest advocate for it on here, as i said before it was obvious we weren't trading BI that we should keep him and run out the Murray/Herb/BI/Trey/Zion lineup.

But this. Theis is barely an NBA player anymore, and you absolutely cannot expect Missi or Matkovic to do anything. If they do, great, but planning on them to be contributors is beyond silly.
and not that I care about paying the tax, but it would be extremely stupid to pay it this year in this situation.

Not if you play good defense on the perimeter and help when needed.
And Zion and Trey and BI can all challenge shots from the weak side help, and as long as the defender is still with his man preventing a straight line easy run to the rim, then that's enough to make the shot difficult.
People think rim protectors are there to stop these guys that have free runs at the rim. And while they are better at it than Trey/BI/Zion, that's not how you play good defense. It starts on the perimeter, and when you can switch all 5 positions and still defend on the perimieter at a high level, you're going to limit the easy attempts at the rim. That's why Boston is a top defense in the league, not b/c they have a great rim protector.

Having Gobert does you no good if you suck on the perimeter and leave him to try to stop guys at the rim that have a full head of steam. That's how posters happen. But if you play D where you stop the 3 while allowing a certain path to the rim where you known Gobert's help is at, that's how you play smart D and limit the free runs to the rim.

Maybe in past years but man the Center position has gotten so much better the past 2-3 years.

I mean just in our division there's Wemby, Sengun, Lively, Gafford, and Edey(who I think will be good).

All of those centers would destroy our center rotation.

Yeah, attacking the paint isn't going to be the problem, ending possessions by getting rebounds is. I remember a possession that's seared in my brain from the Anthony Davis era where he was the only big on the court and the other team got 4 shots up on the possession. The Pels played good defense the entire time, but it didn't matter because they never got the rebound and the other team eventually got up enough shots for one to go in.

The Pels have only played with 2 centers the last 2 years, and Larry has been up and down through both. I'm hoping Theis/Karlo/Missi let you cover the Larry minutes more or less. You still have a big hole that JV is leaving to cover. If they do that, I think they can consider themselves an improved team.

Yeah we'll probably give up more offensive rebounds, but if you push the pace off defensive rebounds and are able to score in transition efficiently, that's a good way to prevent 4 guys from crashing the boards on you every single possession.

If we go into the season with this center platoon we're going to have another season where we start like 1-13

No.

BI's value would dwindle even further than it has now.
