The NBA has been examining several plans for a return to play, but numerous members of the board of governors tell ESPN that there's growing support for a plan to bring 22 teams to Disney's ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in July.

This format likely would include regular-season and play-in games to compete for playoff berths in both the Eastern and Western Conferences, sources said.

...The 22-team plan would include teams that are currently within six games of the final playoff spots in each conference, sources said. New Orleans, Phoenix, Portland, Sacramento and San Antonio would land in Orlando under those guidelines, with Washington joining as the only team within six games of the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference.

A proposal for 20 teams remains alive, and that format would include New Orleans, Portland, San Antonio and Sacramento, sources said.

How is this going to include regular season games if only the top 20 or 22 teams go to Orlando?

Are all the teams playing for the 8th playoff spot going to start with even chances for this spot? If not, how do you take into account the difference in remaining schedule difficulties and other variables? There will be many bones to pick no matter what is decided.

I just wish the NBA would decide on a format ASAP so we would have something to really gripe about.

It appears so yeah. We don’t know for sure yet though.

No accounting for the variable in schedule at this pernt. It is what it is.

I'm kind of sad it looks like we won't get the group stage idea, but sounds like we'll get 6-8 games and then a play-in, which is still great.

I'm curious to how they'll determine the schedule given that all teams won't be there. It's not like they can just take everyone's last 8 games and play that out.

Just do several tune up games and then have an expanded playoff.

This.

I actually agree with MM that the group stage would BY FAR surpass any other proposal in terms of revenue and interest.

me too.

im hoping nba regrets this.

whoever gets out of the playin will be on the playoff vibe already.

i would love to see the playin team torch the lakers.

Ive not seen one fan anywhere that dislikes the group stage idea besides WestCoastAg who is losing his mind about everything besides just starting the playoffs as is.

They ought to just accept that this year have an asterisk next to it and have fun with it.

excited to see some more Pels games, but pretty bummed that the league is floating nonsense about creating artificial home court advantage by giving higher seeds more fouls, etc.

They went with a very simple play in "tournament", I can't imagine they'd do anything as out of the box as giving one team more fouls. Plus if they do that it's like practically admitting that officials are biased towards home crowds.

That idea may have already been shelved... I heard it on local news this morning as a "potential idea"
