If this happens, then that means BI's max (with bird rights) would be a 4 year 95,754,880.

The yearly breakdowns would be:

20-21: 21,250,000
21-22: 22,950,000
22-23: 24,786,000
23-24: 26,768,880

Now he could choose to just play under the tender, or try to get a 1-2 year max in hopes the cap shoots back up later.

I'm not so sure he would pass up almost 100 million guaranteed though, especially with his injury history. If he does sign the 4 year deal though, it could potentially be a HUGE bargain for the Pels, as his original max with the projected 115 mil cap would have been right around a 4/125.

He stands to lose even more

His 4 year max would be $110 mil (down from 149 mil)

This next season he would make more opting into his player option rather than signing a new deal.

and you know Rich Paul told him "sure your salary will be less, but you'll make exponentially more with endorsements!"

and then he shows up for his first Ruffles commercial and looks like Rocky Balboa trying to read a script for Beast aftershave

I would imagine that they’ll opt into cap smoothing this time around instead of the way they did it in 2016.

You're probably right. However, it stinks that they did not do it right in 2016 (and that would have prevented GS from getting Durant as well).

two different “they’s” here though.
when the cap skyrocketed it was the players opting to grab their cash now. With the cap plummeting it’s the owners who need to protect their arse. You can 100% believe that the owners will fight tooth and nail to prevent an artificial cap float when revenues are down

ain’t happening

I could see a fake cap smoothing where they leave the cap high but take more than usual out of escrow on the back end. Technically that’s how they handle cap shortages now. Same mechanism but way more than usual going into escrow. Also that way all players pay equally more or less instead of whoever had the misfortune of being a FA that year getting hit the hardest.

Most players have to be going “I’m glad I was a FA last season.”

There were already few good FA targets this offseason to begin with and now the available space to make a play for them is going in the toilet.

I severely doubt Davis, Gordon Hayward, DeRozan, or Drummond opt out, for instance.

a league wide cap reduction benefits the pels in several ways:

1) lowers the max for ingram
2) reduces the market for favors
3) increases the value of an expiring contract (Miller)
4) increases the value of 2nd round picks (non guaranteed contracts)
5) increases the value of a hit if you make one on a 2 way guy (maybe cheatham?)

pels are still in internal build mode anyway. They weren’t going to have space and they weren’t going to be FA players. The only question I have is, if the cap plunges so does the tax line. How are they going to deal with that? Only easy solution would be to bring back amnesty this year

The hell with that. Let the players pay for their decision in 2016. They chose that path, they can stick with it. Owners owe them nothing and them holding out would be even stupider.
