All good choices so far. It seems most Metallica fans prefer the original Metallica over the 90s-today Metallica

No doubt old school Metallica went harder. Don't get me wrong Enter Sandman and the Black album are awesome, but their older stuff was just more raw. (If you promise not to tell anyone, I'll admit there were a few tracks on the newer albums that I liked.)

I agree the original stuff is grade A. I like the black album because to me the instrumentals and lyrics that they used were just brilliant. Holier than thou is a good example. I actually liked some of the death magnetic stuff (a lot of that is because the year 2008 is sentimental to me)

Load and Re-Load are much better than they are given credit for, for the record. But Master of Puppets is sort of the best metal album ever recorded.

We could have used you on the big Metallica thread where many were preposterously claiming that the Black Album was just "ballads and filler". You've named 2 incredible ones that didn't even sniff at mainstream listener-ship.

Here is the correct list:

One
Orion
My Friend of Misery
Four Horsemen
Ronnie

Not just much better- they are both great.

Yes, consider this: James Hetfield, a poor castaway from an abusive Christian Science family had no money, privilege or resources...and yet he took it upon himself at the age of 17 or so to invent a new style of music to express himself (thrash) and then by the age of 23, he had created the crushing masterpiece of that genre.

As opposed to, for instance, Slash. His mother was a big wig in the David Bowie camp, and undoubtedly helped Guns n' Roses on their way to fame. I like Slash and only use him as an example of it being great to know people.

Hetfield deserves much credit for being ballsy enough to get it done on his own.

Yeah, Slash definitely had some advantages, but I don't want to take too much away from Adler, who was basically the original founder.

Hetfield really did just will into existence a new musical style. I wish so bad that we had footage of that first time he and Mustaine plugged in in the same room. Everything changed in an instant. I mean, just think about what other 23 year olds were doing when Metallica was putting out tunes like Orion and Master of Puppets.

Disposable Heroes
One
Motorbreath
Whiplash
The Call of Ktulu
Creeping Death
Wherever I May Roam
Bleeding Me
Low Man's Lyric
All Nightmare Long

S&M was my first metal album. Not the biggest Metallica fan anymore, but I definitely appreciate them for helping to define my heavier musical tastes these days.
