Agreed, that's why I'm also a huge fan of Jimmy Page's slide guitar solo on When the Levee Breaks. So cathartic and to the point.

His death was a tragic loss for rock and jazz fusion, as well as preventable.

Another favorite of mine is the We Will Rock You studio solo by Brian May, just great.

David Gilmour - Comfortably Numb
It's everything that I think a great solo should be. Tasteful, makes you feel the notes. I have respect for people that can run through scales and blaze through solos. High level of skill to do so, but I get jack shite from that. SRV is one of the few that could play fast and the notes still feel like they each serve a purpose. Give me a guitarist that takes their time and phrases well over someone that flys through any day.

Not sure, but it's probably something by Richard Lloyd.

GOAT guitar solo: Johnny B. Goode (Chuck Berry).

All cliche' now, but all awesome.
Pink Floyd: Comfortably Numb... Already mentioned but it's awesome. Makes we wish I did drugs (heroin) or wish I was a feverish British boy in the 50's-60's? Whichever meaning of the song you believe.
Prince: Purple Rain. Very similar to the above mentioned solo in style IMO. Slow but each note counts.
Metallica/Hammett: Fade to Black. If you want fast? It gets fast-ish toward the end. Nothing pisses me off more than when XM cuts the song off when it is played right at the meat of his solo.
And it was mentioned. But Prince and his Guitar Gently Weeps solo on YouTube is one of the most badass things I've ever witnessed. Understated to start. Prince doesn't even have a spotlight on him. Just kind of drifts out. They put a light on him and he moves to mid stage. WAILS! Has a dude in the audience set up to catch him when he leans backward while playing. Then just throws his shite up in the air for (I guess) the same dude to catch it.

Way, way too many to single out. Here's one of 'em: Ronnie Earl "Baby Doll Blues":

Hendrix explicitly stated to a member of Chicago (ETA: Walt Parazaider, saxophone), "Your guitar player is better than me." I would have had that put on my tombstone.
I liked Kath a lot, saw him with Chicago a couple of times in the mid 70s, he was different for that era. Most of the guitarist that came about in the 70s was trying to imitate the tone of Hendrix/Page/Clapton Strats/LesPauls to a Marshall were the rule, Kath's tone really broke that mold, it is a shame he was not more versed in firearm safety.
