Willie Nelson's Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain

I always thought this song and solo were underrated, i.e., no one ever mentions it, but it's one of my favorites from SRV:
Tightrope (live)

David Gilmour - Comfortably Numb It's everythiung that I think a great solo should be. Tasteful, makes you feel the notes. I have respect for people that can run through scales and blaze through solos. High level of skill to do so, but I get jack shite from that. SRV is one of the few that could play fast and the notes still feel like they each serve a purpose. Give me a guitarist that takes their time and phrases well over someone that flys through any day.
Couldn't have said it better myself
Gilmour is as good at conveying emotion with his guitar as anyone.

I never tire of the Felder/Walsh "solo" in Hotel California.
But my favorite is probably David Gilmour-On the Turning Away

The guitar licks and runs throughout that entire song are fantastic.

I'll even extend it to the band as a whole, probably following Waters' lead, but also based on the style of guitarist Gilmour was - but Pink Floyd is the best rock band at using the space between notes as effectively as possible. Using space, spacers, pauses, silence however one wants to describe it. In dialogue of a film or play, such pauses provide a dramatic tension that is not easily discernible in the printed word. The space used by Pink Floyd is precisely why their music is enduring and what made it different. To varying degrees other bands rather broadly in the art/prog rock (King Crimson, Yes, ELP, etc.) did this as well, but Floyd was the master of this tool.

Also gives the chance for some of the SWEETEST air guitar I have ever performed.
It seriously would make you weep..... Gently.

regardless of liking their music, if you don't think those 2 cats can play guitar, the joke is on you.

Apparently the Photograph solo was his audition for the band. They think it may have been the first take that made it onto the final record - he only did 2 or 3 takes, total.
Ace, I came in here looking for a post by you in favor of Phil or Steve (although Steve's solos were few). Phil is a technical perfectionist; e.g. he can always be counted on to perfectly play a part the same way every single time. I recall reading in the Def Leppard "Animal Instinct" biography (which I ordered from Metal Edge magazine in '88) that his solo for Photograph was the key that cemented him as Pete Willis' replacement...

And it may be Floyd heresy, but while I think it is fantastic, it isn't my favorite solo on the album, even. I'm partial to the solo from Mother. (And if you catch yourself thinking, "Damn - Nick was crisp with the timing that day" - that was Jeff Porcaro on drums.)

Switch 625 is the best rock instrumental of all time.
There I said it. (And this isn't a knock on YYZ, it's praise for 625 and Steve "Steamin'" Clark - RIP my brother.)
