Tracy Chapman has all rights to Fast Car in the same way Prince (now his estate) had all rights to songs like Nothing Compares 2 U and Manic Monday
I'm still waiting for examples of original artists getting (non-songwriting) money from covers

Most don't - if I alluded to that than I apologize (Royalties go to songwriter & publishing for the most part from the basic info I know)
Luke Combs is definitely making bank from Fast Car (what percentage is going to who, probably just the accountant knows)
I knew a punk band that covered 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' - they really made no money from it and the little the copyright holders (most likely the Jim Steinman estate RIP) took from them - it was basically a wash (it's on most if not all streaming platforms)
There are people on this board that have released music on their own that can give you much better answers

I got to sit in a really, really nice recording studio recently on a tour. We were just listening to music through the (very nice) sound system. One of the songs the engineer played was the Cash cover of “Hurt.” Holy shite, it sounded incredible. I’d never been that big of a fan of the song, but through that system, it had a whole new level of power.
Listening on that system was pretty awesome. I love music, but I’m not an audiophile. That experience made me want to invest in a quality sound system.

Referencing Cash in the same vein as Combs is blasphemy.

I agree.

I haven’t heard the fast cars cover. Hurt made my ears bleed before I could change the channel.

I think hurt is bad because it came from some cringe emo band

It’s really sad to me how these lefty cucks like Jason isbell and Tracy Chapman sell their songs to obvious racists like Morgan wallen and the fat guy
Like if you want to be real socialist I probably got some burlap you can make clothes out of otherwise stfu and quit making shitty music

That’s not true I don’t listen to any music
Tbh music listeners are like the sports fans or marvel watchers y’all look down on but y’all don’t realize it. Like just make your own music if you want to hear music. We would all be better off living in Appalachia on a porch picking banjos and hitting a jug all weekend then back to the coal mine on Monday

You do know most money from covers go to the original artist and/or whoever has copyrights to the song
Nope, its about 10 cents per physical unit (Cd, Album, etc) and that's for a Mechanical Royalty which doesn't require permission from the copyright holder. The fact it was Cash doing the cover and Rick Rubin producing it means an even better deal was negotiated with the copyright holder (Reznor?).

Dynamite Hack for example actually lost money because of the success of their cover of Boyz in Da Hood - but you actually know nothing about the business world or copyright laws or what artists actually make from cover songs - so please, amuse me and continue
Is that what they said in a fanzine blog interview somewhere?

I don't care for the voice of Luke Combs.
Cash wasn't a polished singer but his baritone/bass voice was unique and different than his peers.

Cash's version only works with the video. On the radio, it's a bore.

Well, that’s certainly an opinion.
My opinion is that this thread is a great way to know who I should pay attention to regarding music.

The only correct answer is Metallica - Turn the Page

A bore? I don't know any Johnny Cash song that he covered was boring.
I heard this song on the radio and it certainly wasn't boring.

Both covers are really well done IMO, but Cash's cover of "Hurt", gave new somber context to that song (especially if you are older), while Comb's cover of "Fast Car" loses context (due to the demographic of the singer and the moments in time) and can't capture the subtle political statement of the original, which seemed to me to be " We've got to pull ourselves out of his hole". The trouble was, the intended audience of the original message, didn't listen to it much, and never will.
Comb's version will reach even less. It's just a cover song. He should have done a good Otis Redding number instead.

I like them both. Luke Combs sucks but I have always enjoyed Fast Car and his version is decent. Johnny Cash is the man.

Hurt is bad because is is super overrated just like Cash himself.
