Real Rap (Hip Hop) has gone underground once again. It's out there, but you have to really search.

This is the truth.
Most of the quality rap gets no mainstream play. A guy like Soulja Boy, gets played on the radio from Anchorage to Miami, which is what most people can identify with. Most of the really good artist really aren't even getting plays, outside of regionally. Some of them are recognized by mainstream media, but in large, most aren't what the general population would be considered to be famous.

I blame it on the cult of the producer. The MC has been minimized in favor of big name producers, who just put whoever out there to spit their rhymes. The mainstream doesn't value flow anymore.
Though there is some great underground stuff, I'm not digging that hard in a genre I don't care that much about. I'll keep buying each Talib Kweli or Mos Def album, but I'm not keeping up with the new guys.

Not only was rap at its peak from the late 80s to late 90s but R&B had very diverse and wide appeal. It covered the whole spectrum as well. Generally speaking, I'm not a big rap/hip hop/ modern R&B fan but I can appreciate when it's very good. The aforementioned era had extremely diverse acts like NWA which was brilliant hardcore gangsta rap, Arrested Development and its conscientious political rap/R&B, Public Enemy and its militant message, Run DMC and Beastie Boys old school rap, and even smooth R&B from a group like The System (Don't Disturb This Groove). At no time since the late 90s has the genre of music had near the depth of both mainstream and underground appeal that it did in the late 80s to late 90s.

Kanye West put out an absolute masterpiece of an album in 2010. And his albums before that were very good. Looking to Kanye West alone refutes an allegation of hip hop since 2001 being pure trash.
But we don't have to limit ourselves to Kanye alone.
I'm a fan of B.o.B, so I'll toss his name in the mix as well.
And Big Boi's solo album was excellent. There's another.
Eminem has put ample good material since 2001. This is undeniable.
Lupe Fiasco too. And Kid Cudi too. I'm sure I'm missing some obvious ones, but the point remains: hip hop hasn't been pure trash since 2001.
Although I will acknowledge that hip hop is a lot better off with OutKast in the game. Would love to see those guys get back together.

As far as Illmatic goes, its probably the most universally agreed upon album in rap. I wouldn't disagree with anyone that has Illmatic as the greatest rap album ever.
NAS is just so nasty on that album, damn. Every joint is classic. Personally, I have Reasonable Doubt right there with it though. It didn't sell as much as Illmatic but it's Jay-Zs best album IMO. I just never run into anybody that listened to Reasonable Doubt but me it seems.

Reasonable Doubt is Jay's best and it is one my favorite hip hop albums. D'Evils and Dead Presidents are the shite. That album has so many great songs. Its definitely a classic album.

I would disagree with them, but I would acknowledge the reasonableness of their choice. It's an excellent album; it isn't my personal favorite.

I could go forever about Reasonable Doubt. Track for Track its the best rap album along with Illmatic IMO. Jay-Z takes you through the ghetto as only he can. I wish all rap fans would buckle down and listen to this album.
