musical abilities of Lee, Lifeson, and Peart is just ridiculous.

They were so unbelievably precise. I can picture them trying to cut an album.

Good question. Styx blew from start to finish. That's a band I've always uniformly hated.

As for Rush, once they started to develop a semi-prog identity they did some decent things, but with them I always felt like the whole never really equaled the sum of the parts.

Nothing whatsoever against Bill bruford as he's one of my favorite drummers of all time, but Neil Peart in King Crimson would have been.....interesting.

Of course Fripp would have said he was "a horrible drummer, way too busy" for KC.

Styx was loved by teenage girls. Most of their music is annoying, synthesized organ shite.

Getty Lee of Rush has an annoying voice, and they aren't the best songwriters, but their technical skill and virtuosity as a group is unquestionable. Getty Lee would throw down some increadibly complicated bass riffs in mixed meter while singing and playing piano with his feet (I've seen him do it). All while Neil Pert plays a 3,000 piece drum set like he's an entire drum line and drum corp pit crew (complete with marimba and vibraphone). You have to remember, when listening to Rush, that that's only 3 people playing...and that's what they sound like live. They are actually all playing that shite at the same time. Incredible.

I was always a Tommy Shaw guy. Tommy Shaw free of all that Dennis DeYoung Broadway Musical stuff would have been legit.

The Rush documentary where Geddy Lee laughs about other bands making "I drink the milk of honey dew" jokes in the 70's is comedy gold.

Both were essential Rite Of Passage bands for American teens exactly my age. Five years either way, and I can't imagine it being your thing. You had to be there not just show up at the deconstruction with the snark...

Rush's sound was large, amazing sound for a trio. Some of their live musical pieces from the late 70's are almost indistinguishable from their studio sound.

As for Styx, I liked a couple of their songs where Tommy Shaw was featured. Snowblind, Crystal Ball, Renegade. The DeYoung stuff was definitely more theatrical and oriented toward females and I didn't care for it.

The only people who liked it less than us were Tommy Shaw and that other guitarist. Styx hated Styx.

What are you? 12?

Rush kicked some arse in the day. Neil Peart is one of the best drummers of all time man.

Tommy Shaw from Styx is a great musician as well. He played with Nugent in the Damn Yankees and rocked.

Styx has a few good old songs like Blue Collar Man. The latter stuff when they got enough of Dennis DeYoung's bullshite and got rid of him after that Mr Roboto crap sucked arse for sure. Saw them in BR LSU Assembly center for my first concert in 78 I think.

Truth.

I saw them in the Superdome in 84-85 and they rocked the house. I think it was the Moving Pictures album tour. Great times.

I saw them at Hirsh in Shreveport probably the same year, around 78. Pieces of Eight tour. They were great. There later stuff was crap, but it wasn't always that way.

I can remember the fog machine and the stage completely covered with fog. You could hear the piano, and then you saw it coming out of the floor with the intro to Sail Away. Great show. One of my first.

Young playing lead on a solo, and steps rising up out of the floor underneath his feet. One step came up higher than the other, so he's got one knee bent under his guitar while he's wailing away. After his solo's over, the steps descend back into the floor, and Young walks away still playing his guitar like nothing happened. Quite impressive to a young kid at the time.

Their later stuff really tarnished their image and ruined there legacy for future listeners. Pretty sad really.
