Stevens & Pruett was a great show also.
I went to high school with two of Pruitt's sons. Pretty funny stories out of that. One of them showed me Stormtrooper's of Death, speaking of "metal".

It's simple, radio is going to play what most people want to hear. Most people are complete and total idiots. Nothing you can do about that.
94.5 and 106.9/107.5 are the only stations. I listen to both of them on my drive in sometimes just to get traffic and local stories, a little talk radio, and music that isn't the best, but not the worst thing in the world. When I really want to listen to my music, it's Pandora or Sirius/XM (while I have a free 6 months at least).

Now that I travel for work I’ve found that it seems the bigger the city, the shittier the radio. Atlanta, Indy, Orlando, and Dallas FM radio all suck royal cock as far as I found. Denver is an exception with a couple of good stations. The hands down best FM rock radio I’ve found has been in smaller cities and towns. Greenville, SC for instance has a couple of pretty good ones, as does Omaha. The absolute best FM rock station I’ve found on the road though is WWHG The Hog in tiny-arse Janesville, WI of all places. Now of course they do play some standard rock radio crap but also a really nice catalog of stuff you do not hear on FM radio for the most part. This is just a small sampling of what I heard on it:
Metallica — Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
Iron Maiden — Number Of The Beast
Limp Bizkit (yeah I know but FM radio) — Faith
Accept — Balls To The Wall
Godsmack — Shine Down
Smashing Pumpkins — Rocket
Wolfmother — Woman
Judas Priest — Hellion/Electric Eye and Hot Rockin
Ted Nugent — Great White Buffalo (Live)
Clutch — Mob Goes Wild
Motorhead — Ace Of Spades
Kiss — Shock Me and Cold Gin
Megadeth — Sweating Bullets
I heard every one of these and more great ones that I didn’t jot down on The Hog in Janesville. All during daylight hours. That is some solid stuff.
ETA: Just remembered another. Def Leppard, Rock Brigade.
I mean seriously. What station plays Rock Brigade? I was amazed.

I think small towns are more likely to have independently owned radio stations. Clear Channel and the other big companies own all the big city stations and make them all stick to the same playlist.

93.7 out of Lafayette used to play a lot of metal like Slayer and Pantera before they sold their station to a bible network.
Also 96.9 out of Alexandria, LA plays a fair amount of less mainstream 80’s metal, but not necessarily a ton of Slayer.

Yeah, Wasted tends to get most spins off On Through The Night. Album is underrated. Those cats were teenagers making that.

Obviously New Orleans is in the same boat. 95.7 is repetitive 70's Journey, Boston, Zeppelin over and over. Never any new songs from the classic artists. 92.3 is that Imagine Dragons and Lumineers that are considered rock today.
95.7 gets old......and the DJ's there privately hate it. When they first played some Greta Van Fleet, the GM was all up in them for playing music by a new band that wasn't "classic"
There's a lot of good rock out there that is not hard rock/ heavy metal like the Record Company, JJ Gray and Mofro, The Black Keys, etc. . Back in the day, these guys would get a lot more airplay on even classic rock stations like the old WRNO or WCKW where it did not have to be old to be classic.

Hell yeah. When I first heard Wasted sometime in the fall of 1980 I quickly went out and got the album on vinyl and it grabbed me right from the start of Rock Brigade. So damn good.
I never did get over the firing of Pete Willis though.

The rock, metal, alternative demographic hardly listens to FM anymore for music.
For 10 bucks a month I can listen to all that. FM is dead for those genres.

97.1 is the only station you need to know about if you’re in Houston

89.7 is the other FM station I flip to some. It's the Alvin Community College station but they play a pretty good variety of rock.
