I hear ya... I don't mind his politics and I hate Ted Nugent's music, so it works out well for me... Ha

Goddamn you, Ben McCulloch. Hate you more than any other man alive! One of my all time favorite songs.

Such a suck-up thread with no one answering the question.
Good music and good lyrics are good; they're just not popular. A 4/4 beat you can shuffle to will beat out a great, whiny song every time.
I, like Cotton, like Steve Earle, TT and AA. That said, most of their work is rather somber: "I hope he breaks your heart" .. Life in prison in Angola ..
Then comes Luke Bryan or Darius Rucker with a little pop-dance number and it's big hit city.
The bottom line is the majority of people don't like the music Cotton likes .. ain't that a shame (Fats Domino). A little rug cuttin pop and some good alternative country do not have to be mutually exclusive.
Of course, I don't know anyone who actually agrees with me.
TT, Varsity, pencilled in for the Fat Man. Trip to Baton Rouge just to buy CWK a cold barley pop.

His show on XM Outlaw Country on Sundays is awesome if that hasn't been brought up yet.

You aren't one of those people that HATES the popular songs that an artist does are you? Sorry, but Copperhead Road, Guitar Town, and Someday are easily the best songs Steve Earle has released. I'm not saying he hasn't put out other good songs but those songs on his first big album are his most popular and his best imho.

Steve Earle can be over the top preachy with no sense of humor.......and I am a liberal. He has some great stuff but I've seen him live a couple of times and I just wanna say STFU and sing. I think he gets plenty of respect from people who appreciate music......all 433 of us.

Alt.country, difficult to categorize, middle aged, overweight. Not marketable in a music industry where an artist must be young, fresh-faced, and perform pop music set to steel guitars.
Also, he was antiwar before antiwar was cool, and he supports a bunch of other counterculture issues that are unpopular in GOP and Jesus Nashville.

Hell, he supports counterculture issues that make most liberals uncomfortable. He has far more in common with punk than anyone else. Of course, DIY 80s style punk is deader than Dillinger, and it is a genre that has sold out harder than country. He's not "selling rebellion for money".

They are nice songs, but I think they are far from his best...

I believe a few have offered up his politics as an answer, if you read through the tread before posting...

I don't like Steve's politics but I enjoy his music. I got to meet him couple years ago when he had just released his Townes Van Zandt tribute...which is awesome! He did a solo acoustic set at Cactus Records here in Houston. Really cool guy and didn't mind hanging out afterward and talking. I talked to him a little bit about his role in the Wire, and if he was going to do anymore acting.

Exactly. They're good songs and I enjoy the hell out of them but they're nowhere close to his best.

Good point. I did read the whole thread, I just didn't make the leap to that causing him to be less popular.
Good point.
