Why do so many people hate Nickelback so much?

I happened to be driving a vehicle yesterday that had a CD player in it and I didn't have my phone stereo, so I just let it play. Tunes were pretty decent, had me bobbing my head and singing along.
Lo and behold, it was actually a Nickelback CD. They weren't that bad. Perhaps a bit generic and repetitious, but nothing near deserving the vehemence I've witnessed for them on the Internet.
So what's the deal? Are they just the cool band to hate? Or is there another reason?

I'll admit, I rocked some Leader of Men back in the day
But Nickelback does deserve most of the hate, because most of their songs are god awful, but bands like Hinder and Theory of a Deadman are just as bad, and don't get near the hate
I think Nickelback has just become the poster child for bad rock on the internet, thus the reason why their name is thrown around everywhere

They made terrible generalized pop rock songs, that all sounded then same, for the sole purpose of making money.

I would imagine because most, like me, think they are garbage... I'd rather listen to teen pop or nashville country...

It's because they are a truly terrible band that I actually encounter. Crappy pop singers don't bother me because they are easy to avoid, and I never encounter their music. Besides, they will go away in a few months. Nickelback seems eternal.
I hate crappy bands in genres I like a lot more than bands in genres I don't listen to at all.

I was hating on Nickelback way back in the day when they were all over the radio. Nowadays I think they're a really talented and underrated rock and roll band. Some times I'll even go to a strip club just to hear their music.

Because they think its the "cool" thing to do. They think that their hating on Nickelback will propel them through the hipster-music snob ranks. I think its hilarious.

if you want to propel yourself into the "hipster music snob ranks", you hate popular indie bands such as The Black Keys, Arcade Fire, Bon Iver, etc.
You don't get any hipster cred by hating Nickelback.

They are not that great of a band, I agree. But its kind of ridiculous how people go out of their way to hate on them. There are many bands I hate way more than Nickelback, but I don't flame them every chance I get.
