No one's mentioned him yet, but Pat Martino is probably the greatest hard bop jazz guitarist ever. In 1980, he had an brain aneurism and lost all memory of how to play. He actually re-taught himself how to play again. Dude's like 75 now and still kills it.

Not crazy about that style, but that is incredible playing. What kind of guitar is that?

It is Gilmour for me. Joe Bonnamassa is one of my top 5's as well..

If I'm being subjective, I have to go John Petrucci of Dream Theater.

I think he's criminally underrated and everyone seems him as a pure technical/speed guy (of which there are NONE better).

But he can do both. I just got to seem him live for the first time Saturday, and I've never seen such a display of skill in my lifetime. It was a sight to behold.

Hollow Years Solo

Under a Glass Moon Solo

The man has incredible finesse when called upon, and can absolutely melt your face at will.

For the combination of technical skill and creativity, I'd have to say that Zappa is my personal favorite.

for me, it's Terry Kath and it's not particularly close. Backed up by the fact that Hendrix and Joe Walsh have both said they couldn't do the things that he did with a guitar and those are 2 others in my top 5 along with Page and Gilmour.

Hendrix said that about everybody

He was always generous with the compliments

Snowy White’s guitar solo in Pink Floyd’s complete version of “Pigs On The Wing” is the best guitar playing I’ve ever heard.
