Specifically: voice quality, range, command of the stage and ability to work the audience....

My Opinion in No Particular Order:

Bruce Dickinson - Iron Maiden
Geoff Tate - Formerly of Queensryche
David Coverdale - Whitesnake
Rob Halford - Judas Priest
Sebastian Bach - Skid Row & Solo
David Lee Roth - Van Halen
Ronnie James Dio - Solo & Black Sabbath
Ozzy Osbourne - Solo & Black Sabbath
W. Axl Rose - Guns ‘n Roses
Vince Neil - Motley Crue

Honorable Mention (Based on voice quality & range. His band was never in the same league as the above vocalists but this dude had some pipes):
Miljenko Matijevic- Steelheart

James Hetfield - Metallica
Jani Lane - Warrant

Neil? Maybe circa 1984 but it went to shite quickly. Diamond Dave? No.

No love for Tom in Cinderella? Come on now!

What about the two singers in Night Ranger?

Top for me is Bruce -Maiden then Bach.

If you’re talking frontmen who can control the audience, then he’s alright. However, no objective evaluation of vocal quality or range should place Neil anywhere near a top-10 list.

So many questions...

Is this exclusively an ‘80s list or was that some sort of unconscious bias?

Also, it just seems odd to specifically limit this to hair metal and “metal”. Does that include other sub-genres? If so, half of this list is getting axed.

You fools need to listen to some Devin Townsend.

Seriously, nobody has mentioned Devin, Mike Akerfeldt, or Maynard James Keenan. That's just funny.

He included David Lee Roth, so it doesn't even need to be metal at all.

Haha. Very true.

Then again, I’ve met some jokers who consider Van Halen to somehow be metal.

Your mention of Johannes Eckerstrom is appreciated. He has great range, and an amazing stage presence.

They are a fun show...

Headbangers:

I knew going into this that I would get fricked with pretty hard about Vince Neil. I should have been more specific and mentioned I was referring to the Vince Neil of the 80’s, not the no-singing, let me get the audience to help me sing fatass that he is now. Trust me, I know. Seen him live as a solo artist post Motley Crue and it’s not pretty.

However, I included him on this list because Crue has been my favorite band since ‘82 and he was a great frontman once upon a time. Also, as a nod to The Dirt, which is a really entertaining film.

All opinions are welcome so thanks for all your comments both cool and douchey.

If we’re doing that, then let’s just expand it out to hard rock. In which case, it’s Robert Plant and then everybody else duking it out for a far distant second place.
