I saw haggard play a set before Bob Dylan came on stage when I was 17 and didn't fully appreciate it. I was familiar with Mama Tried (the Dead play it) and Okie From Muskogee but that was it.

I listen to a ton of cool jazz now. But honestly even at 16 i appreciated it even though it wasn't what i listened to on a regular basis.

I've always listened to an eclectic mix of music, even when I was young. When I was 16 I had a pretty good vinyl collection of classic rock, classic soul, and older country music.
Phish and Panic were popular at my high school, but I never could get into the Dead when I was 16. Now at 32, the Grateful Dead make up the bulk of the music I listen to.

I liked Zappa at 16 but only some of it, now a lot more of it makes sense. Similarly I liked the Who but didn't really care for Live at Leeds. Live music is something I'm much more into now than at 16. Also Folk/West Texas/Blues/Cajun/Zydeco/The Dead are the kind of things I would not have listened to at 16.

Bingo. I grew up during the transition from Doo-wop to the British Invasion and then on to "classic" rock (psychedelic). Never had any appreciation for the great country legends until the late 80's or early 90's. Now they are deeply etched in my musical heart.

Waylon muthafricking Jennings. I actually saw him at the gran ole opry when I was in my early teens. Didn't recgonize 1 song other than cover of Me and Bobby Mcgee. Now I wake up in the mornong with Honky Tonk Heroes.

Aside from the musicianship, Don Fagen is a great lyricist, one of my favorites. Good choice.
