The "Hair Band" era of the 80's was in such a strange time for music. When Punk Rock and New Wave music were making their mark, at least we had some real rock. Most of the bands from this genre were just so damn cheesy and not very good, but Whitesnake was the real deal. David Coverdale was a rock vocal star having previously sang with Deep Purple. He had the pipes and frontman showmanship. This version of the band included Vivian Campbell & Adrian Vandenberg on guitars and the great Aysnley Dunbar on drums. Alas, but even the sucky bands had killer fine gals in their videos. Enjoy that drop at 3:19.........

Don't sleep on John Sykes.

Considering he wrote a lot of that album and it took two very good guitarists to replace him..........yes, he was really really good.

That's the version of Whitesnake I saw in 1990. Rudy Sarzo on bass, Tommy Aldridge on drums. Great White opened.

I've gotten so used to seeing Tommy Aldridge playing drums in the videos off that album- and on tour- that I'd forgotten Aynsley was the drummer who actually cut the tracks in studio.
Edit - Muh grammar

Still of the Night is the GOAT Whitesnake song. Tawny Kittaen be damned.

The reason for the change in lineups was Geffen A&E Executive John Kalodner. He convinced Coverdale to fire the entire band & replace them with "better looking" guys who could play right after they finished recording the self titled 1987 album.
This was the height of 80's glam & Kalodner didn't think a bunch of bluesy average looking British guys could break big in America. So the guys you see in the videos never played on the Whitesnake 1987 album except Adrian Vandenburg who did one solo. It was all planned out to break big in America & it worked. I miss the 80's.

Man after digging into it a bit, I had no clue Coverdale fired the whole damn band. Sykes got the shaft and the video is faked. The song and the album was very good regardless on an era and genre of sucky music. Thanks for the info.

I like their original early 80's version of "Here I Go Again". I think they did like three different versions of that song.

That's about the only good song they released after Slide It In. Everything after that album, including the eponymous 87 one, is shite. The early albums are amazing.

I'm a bigger fan of Blue Murder than I am of Whitesnake. BM's S/T debut is like sides three and four of Whitesnake's S/T album.
Three decades later and I'm still playing a Boogie Mark III halfstack partially because of John Sykes. He is so, so good and talented, just the absolute total rock package.

Fret, I saw Blue Murder open up for Bon Jovi on their New Jersey Tour at the Monroe Civic Center in 1989. Bon Jovi was not that good but everyone went crazy of course. Skid Row had been the opener for most of that tour but was replaced for one short leg with Blue Murder who was on fire. What a great band. They even played Still of the Night & the place went nuts.

Regardless who actually were the musicians in the studio and made the album, the video would have been fake anyway. It’s very easy to tell that the Still of the Night video was lip synched and the music was verbatim from the album. Pretty much all “live” concert type videos were made that way in the 80’s. That was a bitchin’ video from what was essentially a Super Group.

Sykes is a monster, but it’s no downgrade to get Viv in the band.
Every bit the player Sykes is, maybe more.

Steve Vai did all of the guitar work on that album.
