He's certainly a American music legend, but Aerosmith is in a higher tier, imo

I, personally, revere him more than Aerosmith.

Tom Petty , Mike Campbell, Belmont Tench , Ron Blair , Steve Ferrone ,Scott Thurston were still great after 30 + years of making music . When people like George Harrison, Bob Dylan, and many more admired your songwriting abilities that saying something. Definitely had the Mojo .

they're pretty blah imo too, tried way too hard to be the American Stones,

Yeah if only Aerosmith hadn’t tried to emulate The Rolling Stones, just think of how successful they would’ve been.

Why are we comparing the two?

Exactly. Tom Petty could never make an album like Rocks and Aerosmith would never play jangly shite on Rickenbacker guitars. Howza bout some fruit salad where you get a little apple and a little orange without seeming like a dumbass for trying to compare them?

I saw him at Jazzfest not to long before he died. I didn’t realize how many good songs he had. His entire set was nothing but hits

the only reason plant operators are putting Tom Petty ahead of Aerosmith is simply because he is dead. he is dead now so he must be worshiped and overrated. fools.

Obviously the greatest singer/songwriter of the late 70s and 80s.

BS. His legacy had been sealed for at least two decades before his death. If he stopped making music after Wildflowers, my opinion would not change (though I do enjoy a good bit of his post Wildflowers stuff).

I like his music better than Areosmith. I think Areosmith is more mainstream worldwide, I could be wrong. I wouldn't put him up with the all time legends but is a solid performer and artist.
