I think Petty is under-appreciated. I like aerosmith to the degree they have a good bit of songs I will listen to if on (have some of their music on playlist).
But from time to time I will listen to just Tom Petty songs.

Why are we comparing the two?
Tom Petty had a great career and he comes up in my rotation constantly.
The two acts are very different. Tom Petty was a little more traditional/roots/americana than Aerosmith.
His music will hold up longer.
And here I am comparing the two..

Much better songwriter, composer, and producer. Aerosmith has, what, 3 "classic" songs? And those were from their early days when they actually rocked. Petty has a couple hours worth of songs over 30+ years.
