What local establishments in Baton Rouge will let us play? We've played Timeout Lounge, The Guru, Chelseas (RIP Chelseas), various house parties and Phil Brady's. I'm not looking to steal your slot. I'm just looking to get in front of a crowd and play. We don't even care about getting paid.

If it's rock music you can try Lava Cantina. They've hit the doldrums since they apparently changed management and decided to pare down their live music budget.

Ah, I used to love playing Chelsea's. RIP, indeed. If you're playing originals, try the Spanish Moon. I think there are a few "listening room" types of places around town, but I'm drawing a blank on names.
Other than that, you'll need to have three sets'-worth of cover tunes to play at places like Roux House, Boudreaux & Thibodaux's, Superior Grill; etc.

My buddy has had bands at Beauvoir Park (Behind Chelsea's), it's been a while but I believe Reverend Louie sets it up. You know that group? If not not sure on other venues but all the same bands (Rakers, Julien, TJ, etc have all played there).

I played there once before with Reverend Louie (great guy). It’s a really cool place no one knows about, but I’m not sure how often they do concerts. It’s been a few months since I’ve heard about one. I think the city permitting office found out about it and wasn’t too pleased.

What kind of music do you play?
Posted on 1/18/18 at 8:43 am to madddoggydawg
He plays both kinds. Country and Western

I just want to know how many of you were in that epic facebook meltdown on the Baton Rouge Musician group page when that one kid asked if there was anyone wanting to play music other that “stupid country or swamp pop”. That b&tch and troll fest is still going

This is some bullschit. Your time and effort and service is not worth anything? I hate bands like you. All you do is screw it up for other bands that are out there. Bands provide an entertainment service and deserve to be paid. Stop screwing it up for everyone else by giving it away for free.

That fat zit-faced doom-metal douche got roasted pretty thoroughly. I haven't checked back on it in a few days; guess it's time to revisit.

I disagree. Those willing to play without getting paid, typically are not worth paying. Those who demand to be paid, typically are worth being paid. The bands who do get paid and the bands who do not are not playing the same gigs. Think of those bands who play for free like interns. The experience of getting up in front of people is invaluable in getting a group to become more professional than just a bunch of buddies having fun in their dad's garage.
As for playing for "exposure", such events have been good to me. I met a lot of people and landed a lot of gigs I would not have gotten without cutting my teeth by playing for free.
Also, there's nothing wrong with wanting to play something other than country and swamp pop, but the way that guy did it, he brought the roast on himself. There's no reason to disrespect musicians of any genre even if you have no interest in playing their music.

playing for "exposure",
That is the old line by promoters to get free labor for events they are making money off of. Sure man, you will get all this exposure and it will help you out. I am glad it has worked good for you, but the more people do it, the less promoters and club owners want to pay other acts. Club owners are cheap and if they can get a crappy band for free, they will go that route and then start expecting better acts to play for free. I just don't see an upside to it. Even if you suck, they are hiring you and you should get paid for the load in/out. I always joke that we get paid for the load in/out, playing music is free and the fun part.

Yes, I know the group. I've played with the Reverend before.
ETA: We play all originals.

Ok, we'll start playing for $4,000 a night. Let us know where we need to show up please.

quote:You can make something between $0 and $4000. Hell, my son is in high school and the lowest he has been paid for an acoustic gig is $100/3hrs each for a two man band. His full band occasionally plays for free when we know it will lead to additional gigs...usually charity events.

No one will pay an original rock band that only has 45 minutes of material that doesn't have any real gigs under their belt. You can't get paid cover gigs until you have 3 hours worth of material. You can't get paid original gigs until you have experience. The bottom rung on the ladder for original bands pays nothing unless you already have an established reputation from playing in previous groups. It's just a sad reality.

Have you reached out to Mid-City Ballroom?? It's a sweet venue.

We have about 2 hours worth of original songs but limited experience. We may gig once every 3 months or so (maybe 10 times total). And we do it because we love playing for people.
