REM, "Murmur"; "Chronic Town EP was great as well, but I think most fans consider this to be the band's debut album.

Leftoverture - Kansas

They had at least 3 albums before Leftoverture. The first was Kansas. Honestly, the older stuff holds up better for me than Leftoverture.

I guess I thought it was their first album because it was recorded at Studio In The Country in Bogalusa where I grew up. Got to meet the band because they stayed at Sportsman Inn where my mom worked as a desk clerk.

Was the name Kansas really based on the actions of John Brown there, as the cover would suggest?

They were from Topeka. John Brown makes for a much better album cover than a photo of the Topeka skyline.

I lived in Lawrence for a couple of years, the civil war era history there is pretty interesting.

Hard to top some of the seminal debuts of the mid-late 60s and Pearl Jam's Ten but I always come back to Led Zeppelin's debut and The Beatles' Please Please Me, the sound on Led Zeppelin's debut revolutionized music production and Plant delivers his greatest vocal performance ever and Please Please Me contains I Saw Her Standing There and Twist and Shout bookending the album, a great debut for the world's most consequential artist/band and foreshadowing of what would follow.

Basically the same album but more raw and un-engineered. I like it better.
