What's up with rap music these days? It's like there's no melody...

I've listened to rap my whole life, but I haven't listened to that much new music over the past 5 to 10 years.
But one thing I've noticed when I do happen to hear a rap song these days is that I can't believe this shite is so popular.
The beat seems to have no melody anymore. The only "melody" comes from the rapper using auto tune to slightly sing his raps. And their rapping sounds like they're half asleep, slurring the words that are barely coming out of their mouth. And they're rapping in all these weird rhythms.
It's just so foreign and strange. It's like.. what happened to rap music? It seems more popular than ever, but every time I happen to hear a new rap song I'm like wtf is this mess and how is it so popular?
Am I just getting old or is this really some new kind of weird style that other people complain about too?

You don't like music in the key of PPPRRRTT?

They ran out of songs to sample

Rap melody seems like an oxymoron.

You're talking about mumble rap. I'm not much of a fan either.
If you want newer stuff not like that, Run The Jewels has a new album. Denzel Curry, Yelawolf, all of TDE and Dreamville...there's still plenty of good stuff, you just have to look harder.

Agree.

This is rap's best era since its golden age IMO. As with every other genre of music you just have to look past a lot of the Top 40 stuff.
Great Hip-Hop albums any music fan should like from the last decade:
Some of the best of the best:
good kid, m.A.A.D. city - Kendrick Lamar
To Pimp a Butterfly - Kendrick Lamar
Pinata - Freddie Gibbs & Madlib
My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy - Kanye West
We Got it from Here... Thank You 4 Your Service - A Tribe Called Quest
Other greats:
WWCD - Griselda
Bandana - Freddie Gibbs & Madlib
Alfredo - Freddie Gibbs & The Alchemist
Section 80 - Kendrick Lamar
DAMN. - Kendrick Lamar
XXX - Danny Brown
Atrocity Exhibition - Danny Brown
The Money Store - Death Grips
Flower Boy - Tyler, the Creator
IGOR - Tyler, the Creator
Kids See Ghosts - Kids See Ghosts (Kanye West and Kid Cudi duo)
Daytona - Pusha T
Acid Rap - Chance the Rapper
Coloring Book - Chance the Rapper
Run the Jewels 2 - Run the Jewels
Run the Jewels 4 - Run the Jewels (Very relevant to the United States right now, album came out last week)
1999 - Joey Badass
All-Amerikkkan Badass - Joey Badass
Grey Area - Little Simz
Lalia's Wisdom - Rapsody
Dicaprio 2 - J.I.D.
Saturation - Brockhampton
Saturation 2 - Brockhampton
If You're Reading This It's Too Late - Drake
All My Heroes Are Cornballs - JPEGMAFIA
2014 Forest Hills Drive - J Cole
Civila Demo - Isaiah Rashad
Great Trap (or "new style" as you put) Albums:
Rodeo - Travis Scott
Culture - Migos
Dirty Sprite 2 - Future
Die Lit - Playboi Carti
What a Time to Be Alive - Drake & Future

Good list. There's so much interesting rap out there that it's impossible to keep up with it all.
I felt kind of like the OP about some of the newer mainstream type rap, but I'll confess that I've come to like quite a bit of it as well. My main problem with a lot of that stuff is that most of the popular rap albums will have like 1-2 banger songs that I get into (I'm looking at you Da Baby) and the rest doesn't do much for me. The huge list at the first of your post are a bunch of quality Albums that are worth listening to in their entirety.

Yeah, it is impossible to make a comprehensive list, but I tried to thrown in at least one album that was a highlight of the various trends in current hip-hop.
I understand where you and OP are coming from in regards to rap albums having a few bangers and not much else. That is probably the worst trend of this era and I think this has become the norm because of streaming. More albums and tracks released = more streams which = more money. Regardless of quality of the music as people are going to give something from a hot artist a listen or two no matter what. Da Baby is a great example, but I'll use Migos as an example since I mentioned Culture as a great album. 13 tracks, 58 minute run time, really good and focused album. Then Culture II drops a year later and has 24 tracks and has an 1 and 45 minutes run time bloated with low effort throwaway tracks that lack creativity
If OP can't enjoy something like Travis Scott's Rodeo, which is a unique genre blending psychedelic trap album, then trap just isn't for him, but current hip-hop has so much more going for it right now than the current dominating trap sub-genre of it.

Just started in on the new album from Naeem, formerly Spank Rock. Pretty good so far.
Also stoked for the new Spillage Village album coming out. JID and EARTHGANG? All day long.
And as for Migos.. my gym must have been playing Migos radio or something the other day, and I just thought.. damn how dominant were these dudes for a bit? Just hit after hit.

I did not know about this, but thank you. JID/Earthgang are both incredible and all their collaborations are fire.
The first single is great.

I guess I`ll go back to my wheelchair with my 80`s, 90`s early to mid 2000`s rap.

I don’t even know what that shite is supposed to be musically or melodically.

It is. If it has a melody, it's not rap.

Denzel Curry seems like the only decent mainstream rapper out there right now. I find myself listening to instrumentals instead of the actual songs now.
