What's one aspect of a song, regardless of genre, that you think is a tell-tale

sign of the song being lame?
For me, when a singer/song-writer drops the name of a famous singer in the song, more often than not, the song is super lame. Seems like I hear this a lot in songs on Outlaw Country.

Modern sampling isn't as good because, well, it's now such a legal tangle. De la Soul and early Beastie Boys could have layer upon layer of samples that would be impossible today because it would bankrupt the band. But great sampling can be an artform. It's also kind of fun to play spot the reference.
It's a shame Questlove isn't able to totally cut loose. He'd be the greatest ever at it, as his music knowledge is near encyclopedic.
As to the OP's question, Auto Tune is a good place to start.

usually when i hear a crowd cheer at the beginning, followed by the first notes of an uninspired solo, i know im in for a tedious 14 min WSP track.

one of my favorite is 3 dimes down - im a fan of how cooley works the tom t hall reference in. surely not what you were talking about, but it came to mind immediately.
