No one else in the 100 person college class is going to be writing about a guy that died in 1938 either.
Just go ahead and write it about Kendrick Lamar and be done with it.

Yeah why would you want to like stand out and be original and write about like an extremely important and like forgotten American musician and stuff that's like totally gay bro.

It has nothing to do with being original. You just act like my music taste is off relative to my age.

You said no one in your class would write about older people as if that's a reason that YOU shouldn't write about them. There's no harm in familiarizing yourself with someone or something new (or old, rather). You really should do yourself a favor, if not for the sake of your grade on this paper, and learn about music pre-1963.
And FWIW, I was born in 1988. Age is no longer an excuse to not learn about music history. Assuming you actually care about music and aren't just worried about a paper.
Sorry if I came off as a dick.

Frank Zappa
Chuck Berry
Bradley Nowell
Anders Osborne - actually would be very cool considering the road he traveled to get to where he is today
Lou Reed
Robert Johnson
SRV
Stevie Wonder - really interesting life and is now an "ambassador of peace" or something
Derek Trucks - playing with the ABB as a young buck and still rocking

ZRo is his stage name
Never had a deal despite working with all of the most influential rappers in his area because no one really trusts him because he's a loose cannon
Should be an interesting paper

Carol Kaye, or some other super session player who played on records for top rock bands. It'd be interesting to get their take on working with the Stones, Led Zep, etc., without actually being in the band.

Duane Allman. It would be a short but interesting read.

Wasn't there someone that turned down a spot in the Beatles. It would be awesome to do a report on someone who turned down a role in a soon to be legendary band and follow the rest of their career.
ETA: forgot about the american stipulation, maybe a similar thing has happened on this side of the pond.
