What bands overachieved in their genres?

I'll start with Metallica. I like alot of their music (particularly the pre-Black album material), and enjoyed seeing them live...however, if each member was unknown and auditioning for another metal band, I'm not so sure they would've gotten too many callbacks, Lars & Kirk in particular. But in Metallica's case, the sum was greater than the parts, so it worked out for them.
I added "in their genres" in the topic headline, because obviously there's different dynamics in play for different genres...

Coldplay. These guys are fricking garbage.

Jethro Tull? Has anyone heard of any of them other than Ian? Flute prog/hard rock? Damn I love their music though.

Pet Shop Boys
I really like them but they rode the back end of the synth-pop wave with a singer and a single keyboard to over 100 million records sold.

I'm not a Coldplay fan....but before this turns into a "this or that band sucks" thread, I'm more interested in seeing someone pick a band he or she actually may like, but at the same time acknowledge the band itself might've exceeded their own expectations....

Metallica is the biggest band in metal, obviously they have some talent. James is a fantastic writer and rhythm guitarist. Kirk came from Exodus, another popular thrash band. Cliff was obviously a great bassist but both Newsted and Trujillo had successful careers before Metallica, especially Trujillo.

Never said Metallica was untalented, but I do think individually they're lacking compared to many of their peers (not including Trujillo here, but he was a latecomer after the band blew up)....but when performing together, combined with their song ideas, they're definitely a force.

Nickelback /thread
For a band that I like...that's a tough one. I'd say the easiest pick would be the one album wonders...those that had a really great album (usually their debut) and then just kind of fizzled, but still put out a good bit more material. This would include:
Live
Third Eye Blind
Better than Ezra
Stone Roses

Forgot to add - Silverchair. They technically aren't hard rock, but their debut seeemed like they would be this type of band. Frogstomp was amazing and they were barely teenagers when they wrote it.

Foo Fighters. They're the only big rock band left, so they get all the money.

I was thinking Foo Fighters here as well. Arguably the biggest band in the rock world for the last decade and one of a handful of “last bands standing” from the last big era for mainstream rock.
Started out as Nirvanas drummer recording an album by himself and a mid 90s college rock act.

Is this thread asking for bands that have shitty players but were successful in spite of it?

I'd have to go with Nirvana.

Widespread Panic, though the jamband genre is filled with lots of crap so it's a pretty low bar.
Still, none of those guys were overly talented at their respective instruments. In fact, other than Schools, I'd say they were all average, at best. But they carved out a niche sound with Mikey's volume pedal and made it work.

Slipknot comes to mind. Not terribly great musicianship aside from Jordison (who was kicked out) and Corey Taylor. They started out as just a bunch of dudes trying to be super extreme and loud and had a massive following despite none of them being particularly great instrumentalists.

Eric Clapton overachieved in his genre.
Ol Dirty Bastard overachieved in his genre.

"Shitty" is way too strong a word, lol....I'd say on paper, they're serviceable musicians, but their band chemistry exceeds whatever limitations they may have.

Widespread Panic is actually a good answer. I wouldn't classify any of 'em as elite musicians (Schools being the possible exception), but they still managed to make a splash in the jamband world...
