The Beatles went from I Want To Hold Your Hand to Rev 9/From The Beginning/Helter Skelter in less than 7 years
I'd use "Tomorrow Never Knows" to make your point -- that was less than 3 yrs after "IWTHYH"

REM. They are two bands to me: Pre-Document and Post-Life's Rich Pageant.
But they didn't change that much. They just became un-hip to the original fanboys.
Listen to Rush's first album and then Roll the Bones or early Genesis' Selling England to mid 80's Invisible Touch. To me, those are changes.
BUTTT, when you add to your topic...

What bands did you like/dislike in their early career, only to morph into something you felt the opposite about later on?
Yeah, I agree REM with Green and their MTV pop videos.

I mis-titled Tomorrow Never Knows.

Scorpions really changes post Uli Jon Roth -era.
Pantera were a glam rock band their first 4 albums then completely went thrash /heavy metal when cowboys from Hell came out

for all I know the Dexateens may actually be the greatest alt-country band on the planet
for all I know, you're right. I've seen them a few times live and they were incredible. Lee Bains carried the torch himself after the band dissolved.

Their first few albums were so good and now they make pop trash. Wish Oly never blew out his voice too.

You would be hard pressed to find a band that changed as much and as consistently over time as the Grateful Dead. From 1965 until 1995 they were at least seven different bands.

I hadn't even thought about the Beatles when making this thread, but they might be the ultimate example. Pre-Revolver Beatles don't interest me nearly as much as the stuff they made afterwards.

Pearl Jam. Their first 3 albums are timeless, but I do not care for their later stuff.

They just became un-hip to the original fanboys.

Their 4th and 5th albums are my favorites. They were my favorite band for close to a decade, but I really can't comment on whether their sound changed after the Avocado album.
They are one of those bands where it literally seemed like I woke up one day and was just totally burned out on them.

Since you mentioned it, I haven’t listened to those two in years. Maybe I should give them another listen.

No Code starts a little slow, but I feel like songs like Red Mosquito, In My Tree, Hail Hail, Off He Goes, and Lukin are some of their best songs. But it seems like every PJ fan hates this album.

Greatness that doesn’t get nearly enough credit because of Ten and Vs.

think you have to look at them as "with Kath" and "after Kath". Their sound and direction really changed after his death. And don't get me started on that arse-clown David Foster
Yea.Im not even sure they deserved the name with their 80's garbage.
