I know it's been posted before but here's Metallica playing in front of half a million people in Moscow in '91:

With everything going at the time they played this show in Russia, was this the most epic conncert ever? Cannot even begin to imagine being there.

That was the Russian freedom concert. AC/DC, Metallica, Pantera, and I think The Black Crows all played. It was certainly an impressive lineup

I would go with the 1989 Seattle Coliseum concert on the And Justice for All tour that is on the Live shite Binge & Purge DVD/CD set. Watch it. It is insanity. I wish shows today had that much intensity from the band & crowd.

The N.O. show on that same tour fit how you describe the Seattle show spot on. One of the top two or three intense experiences I've ever had in my life.

And no, I would not call that show in the o.p. the best live show ever.

Yeah I was there in N.O.

Damn good show. Drawback for me though was I didn't have floor access and I HATE being unable to be on the floor up close for a great show.

Now later on, in August of '89, they came back through the south and played in Biloxi, where I was fortunate enough to be up close. Easily one of the top five shows I've ever seen.

I went to a Metallica Concert in Dallas once. The opening acts were Kid Rock and Korn and System of a Down. It was a bad arse show, except that James "wasn't feeling good" so he didn't come out. My first and only chance to see Metallica. And I didn't see the full band. We did get a good show, as Jonathan Davis and others (I think Aaron Lewis and the guy from Static X too) took over singing for James. So that made it a once ina lifetime concert, but still I never really got to see Metallica.

They actually had a make up concert in Dallas months later, but I couldn't do another road trip. The road trip alone was nuts, four people crammed in a mustang, drinking beer non stop the whole trip. Except for the B-team LSU cheerleader driving.

quote:

. Before the gig in Atlanta James Hetfield injured his back in a jet skiing accident and was forced to sit out three shows. Newsted sang most of the songs during these concerts, and the vocals and rhythm guitar were also taken by musicians from the supporting acts, such as Kid Rock and his guitarists Kenny Olson and Jason Krause, Serj Tankian and Daron Malakian of System of a Down, and Jonathan Davis of Korn.[2] [3][4] At the end of the tour Metallica played six make up shows, two for each show James missed.

I've only seen Metallica after they stopped drinking during shows and stuff. Would have loved to have been around for Live shite.

LSU Jax, I didn't have floor tickets originally. As we were walking in me and my buds ran across a group trying to trade floor tickets for balcony. Three of us swapped and had the time of our lives.

One of the best guitarists the United States has ever produced, bar none.

And nothing really flashy, just awesome.

RIP.

Now that is cool as hell!!! Awesome luck. I have to wonder what the hell those people were thinking. Nothing like being in the thick of things up close at a great rock/metal show!!

My buddy and I were in the stands to the left of the stage. Don't know if you saw or remember, but I vividly remember at one point, the security team right in front of the stage went down to the other end of the stage to handle something. So this guy gets out of the crowd and scrambles up on stage. He's then standing there over to the right of Jason, playing some air guitar and head-banging. When security sees him and comes running back down he does a perfect swan dive right back into the crowd. That dude has had a pretty cool story to tell ever since.

And yes, it was the same deal in Biloxi. Super intense down on the floor. Awesome show!!!

Cool, I was at that show (Dallas) as well. I went back for the make up show, and it was great. Much better venue than Texas stadium. Plus Corrosion of Conformity opened and put on a great set.
