Have you seen Graceland?

I don’t thin Graceland is pretentious. It is gaudy and over the top. But as a sign of pretentiousness? I don’t see it. It was a reflection of what’s Elvis wanted and liked and had the money to indulge. He wasn’t pretending - it was who he was.

If anything Graceland is in many ways anti-pretentious. It’s sort of shockingly unassuming and not outwardly lavish by any means.

Kurt wasn’t even the most pretentious rocker in Nirvana, much less all of rock n roll.

I remember being a teen and being so sad he died. He was so talented. It was so tragic how hopeless he was. His music was an collection of depression and drugs. I never knew hope until I knew Jesus.

At its time, it was pretentious. Elvis always was very gaudy in public.

He was pretentious and a hypocrite. It’s well known that he didn’t like Tool, there’s even an MTV video of him mad because of Sober’s supposed rip-off of the Brothers Quay . (It was definitely influenced.) However Nirvana ripped-off the Pixies and Dave Grohl even admitted it.

I distinguish gaudy from pretentious.

Trent Reznor is still my favorite musician of the time. NIN Downward Spiral tour blew the In Utero tours out of the water. Nirvana was great Unplugged, but their music was only going to get worse.

Know how I know you weren't alive in the early 90s?

How was he pretentious?

I've always thought of him as kinda the opposite. Nirvana's music was generally very simple, raw and full of angst. And catchy.

He definitely let success get to his head. I think that was a major part of his angst.

I don't see him as pretentious, just confused and always had a chip on his shoulder for some reason.

Sure, his success was antithetical to his values. He was a highly conflicted individual.

Most of his stuff was written without a purpose. The angst was written in by pretentious music journalists.

It was punk rock for people who didn't like punk rock.

what way was Elvis pretentious?

I mean, he called himself the King, acted like he was God's gift to women, fancied himself as some kind of law man, karate expert, and he was copying his act from Chuck Berry and a lot of others.

Now let's look at the definition of pretentious:

quote:

attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed.

I think the shoe fits. Look I'm not an expert on Elvis. But I don't consider it a great insult to say a musician is pretentious. They probably never get famous if they aren't. It's not like I called him a jive turkey.

Black Francis (Frank Black) sure seems to be the biggest count of all....especially given the moderate stardom that the pixies had. His god complex is monumental and annoying.
